Billy Joe Shaver & Willie Nelson - Wacko From Waco

R.I.P.

He was one of my all-time favorites, second only to Johnny Cash as far as the "Outlaw Country" genre goes for me. Great songwriter and performer. I got to see him perform live three times in about a 10 year span and he put on a great show each time.

Once, when I was in Austin, TX for the SXSW festival, I went to see a screening of a biography about him. After the movie ended, there was an announcement about him being in the theater. He walked out in front of the stage (wearing the exact same clothes he was wearing in much of the film), picked up a microphone and started taking questions from the audience. He seemed to be a great conversationalist and he made me laugh out loud several times during the Q&A session.

Artists with three names seem to have been the norm in that scene. I can dig it.

This bumped real hard on the commute in this morning:

I saw that documentary a few years ago. He was a hellraiser with a heart of gold and a phenomenal songwriter.

I've been reading various eulogies and old articles about Billy Joe the past 24 hours and it's funny that in one of the articles it mentioned how his wife hated Townes Van Zandt. Steve Earle's wife also hated Townes too.

TVZ would always get their husband's into trouble (drugs, alcohol, etc) so they hated having to go retrieve their men from wherever landing spots they were planked at with TVZ.

Apparently Mary Timony played in a band called Autoclave before she founded Helium. It's pretty neat.
