Knowing what's considered "essential" and what someone might like are two different things.
When I had high school friends over to listen to stuff in my bedroom,
Coltrane's Ascension, for example, was just noise, but Kulu Sé Mama
was always considered kool and "listenable." Same thing with Pharoah:
Jewels of Thought or Karma? Yeah, boy! Black Unity? Not so much...
I had a guy give me his copy of Expression back in '74 because it was too far out.
I'm calling him after over 45 years on Tuesday.

Funny, I bought a copy of Black Unity before I bought the other two. I actually didn't enjoy Leon Thomas until I heard his solo work and then went back and revisited Karma and Jewels of Thought and it just kind of clicked.

It was always the yodeling that got my friends and we - well, actually "I" - would go around imitating it in the hallways.

You did? I don't recall any of that, which is strange because that's something I should remember

Big fan of Asha Puthli's voice (which was included on the original release almost 50 years ago):

Yes that is a great voice. I'm going to check out the rest of this record too, this is cool

One thing that I couldn't get anyone to listen to - even small parts of it - was the following massive beauty. I had to wait until nobody was home in order to play it ... and being 12 or 13 years old that didn't happen too often, so I would load it up on my turntable and put the headphones on while sitting behind a set of drums. Goddamn exhilarating experience!

If you've got a couple hours to spare, then great! If not, then you might want to start at about 2 hours ("side 6" as I remember it) and ride it forward.
Massively good players on an incredibly dense piece of music.

Piano – Dave Burrell, Joachim Kuhn
Saxophone [Saxophones], Flute [Flutes], Oboe – Roscoe Mitchell
Saxophone [Saxophones], Flute, Bassoon – Joseph Jarman
Soprano Saxophone – Steve Lacy
Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Flute – Ronnie Beer
Timpani, Percussion – Oliver Johnson
Trumpet – Alan Shorter

I see some Art Ensemble of Chicago dudes in there as well as some familiar avant/free jazz staples like Steve Lacy, Dave Burrell, and Alan Shorter. Neat!
