A blast from the past. Digging up my old favorites

The first Tortoise album I heard and the opening track still sounds as great as ever.

Have you heard Jose Gonzalez's cover? If you're not already a fan of his .. I think you may like him. May as well start with that Joy Division song

I'm listening to songs by Iggy Pop.

The reason: I had heard of Iggy Pop but never knew any of the songs he sings until I heard "Wild Child," which of course I've listened to before on the radio but never realized was by HIM.

So now I'm learning more about Iggy and am listening to more of his songs. I had no idea that he and David Bowie wrote "China Girl," which I like quite a bit. I'd never even heard the song "Candy" before today.

Somehow Iggy's low voice doesn't sound very "wild" like his image is. Still, he has a nice voice. He sounds to me like a lounge singer from the 50s....or at least what I imagine one to sound like. :p: Still, I like "Real Wild Child" very much and feel it is the best of his songs that I've heard so far.

Mr. Pop seems to like to not wear his shirt. Maybe that's his signature style. I remember being pissed off as a child that I had to be stuck on the "shirts" soccer team, so I'm always frustrated when I see men going around shirtless because IT IS SO DAMNED UNFAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think being shirtless is fine; I rather like that he just goes as he is. I'm just pissed that I can't do the same without being arrested. If I made a video of ME naked from the waist up, it wouldn't be allowed on Youtube. Women have even had to fight to get Youtube to allow breastfeeding footage!!! STUPID SEXISM!!!!!!

This is why someday I plan to be arrested for nudity to protest. I've always been curious to see what a jail is like (for a short term, and for a victimless crime). Currently I know one person in jail, maybe for life. I assume Iowan jails are fairly pleasant, as far as jails go. I bought black plastic trash bags for the lab and was surprised to learn that they were made by people who are in an Iowan jail. They are nice bags. Jail might not be so bad if one has something useful or interesting one can choose to do. Of course, "choose" is the operative world. Making plastic trash bags in a factory probably isn't terribly fun.

Someday I plan to be a 63-year-old or so like Iggy, but I'll be thrown in jail because I'm shirtless in public. I look forward to that time when I finally rebel.

"Real Wild Child"

"Candy"

"Lust for Life" -- now, I *had* heard this song before, but never knew it was by Iggy Pop. I don't like this song:

"China Girls" -- nice song, especially David Bowie's cover, which I prefer, but their voices are pretty similar, aren't they?

"Passenger" -- I had never heard this song before today! Fun footage. There's that bare chest again.

The latter is reserved for felons, serving anywhere from a year to life. The plastic bags you like are made by felons in the Iowa Prison Industries.

Nice choices on the music. :)

Hmm...maybe I won't wait if baring it all now means I'll earn a cool new nickname! ;)

Thank you for correcting my misperceptions, skaltezon. Now I know that my nudity, equivalent to run-of-the-mill Iggy's, will cause me to end up in *jail* and not in *prison*...unless I'm a repeat offender. Who knew that discussing Iggy Pop's bare chest could lead to a greater understanding of the workings of the Department of Corrections?!

And yes (pleased and flabbergasted by your knowledge), you are exactly right: our black plastic lab bags are made by none other than Iowa Prison Industries Iowa Prison Industries Home Page . People who are inmates make all sorts of useful items, as you can see.

I wonder if Iggy had any jail or prison time. I wonder if musicians in general are an unruly lot. I prefer to rebel by living healthfully and being super nice to animals including a human or two on occasion. It appears that Iggy's rebellion was much more conventional...he was a heroine addict among other things (on-stage vomiter)...until he began his recent *real* sinister period of depravity which culminated in backstage indulgence in...tea and yoga: :p:

Iggy Pop's conventional rock star non-vegan rebellions:

THE man born James Osterberg Jr helped redefine what it meant to be a rock 'n' roll frontman, setting the bar so high few would be able to top it. But during The Stooges brief but influential existence as the forebears of punk, Iggy would be so high on heroin that he couldn't stand up on stage. When he could stand and perform, he was known to cut himself with glass, smear himself in meat, expose himself on stage, vomit on the audience, and is also believed to have invented the stage dive.

It wasn't until the mid-'80s, after more than a decade of heavy consistent drug abuse of heroin, cocaine and LSD, that Iggy finally cleaned up. Nowadays his stage performance is far more sedate but still impressive, while backstage his indulgences involve fresh ginger-honey-and-lemon tea, yoga, and the occasional glass of wine.

Be prepared for these guys, they're going to be somewhere near you soon.

Almost no one comes near Iowa, s_k! ;)

Do they have a couple songs you'd recommend to listen to on YouTube? I feel the following song is pretty good. I just wish they'd lose the organ sound, because I despise organ music in rock music. Not sure why. Too churchy? Generally if I hear organ music, I want to claw my way out of the room.

They definitely improved since that album.

They went all psychedelic.
But they didn't lose the organ, sorry :).
Glad they didn't, because that would make me lose their interest in them.
Haha, obviously a different thought about organs.
I love organs in rock music. I always have.
