I've started getting in to Jazz lately, listening to the records generally considered to be classics. Today was Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which was my favourite so far. Very impressive.

Even more impressive was the opera Bliss by Australian composer Brett Dean, composed in 2010. I'd heard a few of his works before -all good- but this, his first opera, really seems to show that operatic composition is what he is most suited to: most of his works are inspired by the extra-musical anyway, so this isn't surprising. He finished his second opera, Hamlet, in 2016 so I am looking forward to that coming out on CD.
