Jacob Kirkegaard - 4 R O O M S

For those unfamiliar with the release:

Quote:
This work is a sonic portrait of four abandoned rooms inside the 'Zone of Exclusion' in Chernobyl, Ukraine

Recorded in October 2005, the sound of each room was evoked by an elaborate method: Kirkegaard made a recording of 10 minutes and then played the recording back into the room, recording it again. This process was repeated up to ten times. As the layers got denser, each room slowly unfolded its own unique drone of various resonant frequencies

Jacob Kirkegaard's method is inspired by Alvin Lucier's work "I am sitting in a room" [1970], who recorded his voice in a space and repeatedly played this recording back into that same space. In Kirkegaard's work, however, no human voice is being projected into the rooms: during the recordings he left the four spaces, to wait for whatever might evolve from these seemingly silent spaces themselves

4 ROOMS was released 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster, 26th of April 1986/2006

I'm glad to see a positive comment about it! When I posted it to a vinyl forum I frequent the post was flooded with hateful comments including:

Hell really does exist.

Oh dear God no

Nightmares made flesh.

Part of the ruination of Christmas.

A Canned Gas Christmas

Mannheim Creamslinger

I understand the flak the project gets for the terrifically cheesy Christmas crap, and even their more ambient works are often described as dreadful commercial "new age" music or as one user called it - "proto-Yanni." But the interludes were enjoyable and an early experience for me in my discovery of ambient music - a passion which has since grown to include over 3,400 ambient albums in my library. I was excited to claim this a copy of this handsome set and it was disappointing to see it get so much hate.

Anyway, I'm glad you dug it!

I'm interested in that too. I liked that David Sylvian one about there being a house where no light enters or something. I bet Frown is all over this one.

Ambient music provides me an auditory sanctuary wherein I can find solace and escape the isolation, the ostracization, and the sorrow of a hateful and alien world.

The comfort it affords me keeps me coming back to it day after day. That's how I can listen to so much ambient bs without slipping into a coma. I actually find it revitalizing and soulfully replenishing.
