Alan Lomax really captured some amazing recordings. Just found out about "Sounds of the South."

J Dilla and now DJ Shadow are introducing me to instrumental hip hop. Kinda weird to get used to since I've never been all that into instrumental electronica either, but this is at least way less white. The lack of a rapper whose style can be dated to a particular time period, and greater artistic emphasis on the actual beats (obviously) actually makes this album from 1996 more timeless than anything else I've listened to from then. Even with the scratching. I'm gonna need to buy me a nice dubsack at some point to properly grok this.
