How is it possible for a song to sound this heavy with such a thin, dry guitar sound?

Never listened to much shoegaze past MBV. I think the problem was that I didn't know that all shoegaze wasn't as ****ing noisy as MBV, so I was put off by how relatively clean a band like Slowdive sounded. Now I'm just enjoying the hypnotic energy of this song.

Noisier than quite a few shoegaze bands, with more of a rock influenced sound.
