Urban's Thread Of Reappraisal
Inspired by Jackhammer's 'give me an album to review' thread I have decided to do something along those lines but with a twist.
Each week I will be reappraising 3 bands that I have called shit over the past years. It will be your job to choose any album by one of those 3 bands and PM it to me in an attempt to get me to change my mind. For each band I will list why I disliked them originally and why I think they are worthy of a reappraisal. For this week the 3 bands I have chosen for reappraisal are ..... FUGAZI Reason for dislike: First heard them around the early 90s and was extremely underwhelmed at what they sounded like after the amount of good press they were getting. Never really liked Minor Threat that much either. Think Ian MacKaye is a bit of a tosser. Reason for reappraisal: Didn't really like hardcore or indie much at the time. I like practically everything else on Dischord so I figure I should give Fugazi a chance with it being his label & everything. Mark E Smith being a tosser has never stopped me liking The Fall. RUSH Reason for dislike: A friend of mine recorded me a bunch of their albums at school when money was tight and I couldn't really afford to buy many albums. I tried to like them and did like the occasional song but they didn't really do anything for me. Later on around 92/93 I got into MC5 , The Stooges , New York Dolls and the like , and after discovering that lot Rush just seemed extremely dull and I never listened to them again. Reason for reappraisal: I've given much more boring bands that Rush the benefit of the doubt lately , and I did give them & their fans a lot of stick in my 100 irritating things thread. Consider this a peace offering. THE FALL OF TROY Reason for dislike: To me they sounded like Donald Duck in a foul mood squawking over an Yngwie Malmsteen album. Reason for reappraisal: I only heard about 45 seconds of one song and I was being facetious that day. Over to you.....

This is a fucking great idea for a thread. I'm going to have to start paying closer attention to which bands you've been knocking.
By the way, I'll hook you up on the Rush front. Just getting it set up now. |

Okay, I'm sending you Rush's Exit Stage Left, a live album from 1981 that's their best release IMHO. Sometimes I think Rush's music suffers from being too produced and polished sounding and I think a live recording gives them an immediacy that their studio albums lack.
Let me know what you think. |

Jackhammer, what Fugazi albums are you sending? They're one of my favorites and I'm definitely looking forward to the opportunity to convert a new fan.
Fall of Troy really isn't that good imo. The song in guitar hero was pretty fun to play, I thought it was alright and decided to give some of their other songs a listen. I remember I definitely wasn't very impressed, got bored pretty quick. |

Margin Walker E.P has been sent as it was my first intro to them and I still have the cassette. Nearly 20 years old now!

You still looking into Fugazi? I know it's been awhile sort of forgot about this thread. I can get you 13 songs if you like Margin Walker, it's got that EP plus (obviously) 7 others. If you don't like that, I can try something else. I don't know if you've already given up on them or not though.
