Anyone else watch this, it's been on repeat on bbc three for **** knows how long now, possibly years.

....I've found a new love, and it's for people who appear on these shows and criticise for the sheer point of criticism.
Music critics, people who get paid to criticise music ....

"shiny hapy people, well i dont know what its like over in california but over here in britian were not so shiny and happy, so you can just **** off back to sunny california"

"what rock band writes a song about war anyway?" - That being refered to the manics who were portrayed as these studenty, self-loving whiney immitation intelectuals.

There was no real reasoning behind the criticisms, I got to watch a bunch of people count down this list and make complete arses of themselves. If you don't have a genuine criticism then why ****ing bother coming up with one!!!

On the other hand Most of the list seemed agreeable...

However im rather fond of

Also I feel you can't really criticise a song for being over-played, or for the people that listen to it. I will srvive, although immediately i think of desperate unattractive rat-women with bad karaoke, was a great number. Can't knock it because the people around you are doing bad version of it.

That seems like a weird comment to make about a band from Georgia. Am I missing something here?

littleknowitall 01-11-2009 05:14 PM

no....thats exactly it.
That and a complete misunderstanding of the song, lyrically.

Heh. Yeah that too.

jackhammer 01-11-2009 05:30 PM

Perfect 10 is a great song and even better if you get what the lyrics are about.

Kokoboten 01-12-2009 06:13 AM

What about Lambada??

And Macarena?!

Complete lack of Kim Wilde.

I'm down with 18, but only because I have fond memories of my brother doing a quite theatrical and hilarious rendition of this song.

And I like 92 also. :o:

WaspStar 01-12-2009 07:48 AM

I love Parklife, Every Breath You Take, and Nikita, and I don't hate myself for it.

Ah, Livin' La Vida Loca, there's a title I haven't come across for a good ten years. Kinda hoped I'd never have to again.

I think it's actually kind of a catchy song but damn does it have some awful lyrics. I really don't ask much from pop lyrics, honestly, but in that song they're distractingly bad.

I can hardly remember a thing about it to be honest. Can't wait to youtube it now :D

mr. goth glam 01-13-2009 08:29 AM

I like Cornflake Girl, Money for Nothing (even though it's not even close to the best Dire Straits song)...and...so far as I can see...that's just about it.

I'm torn about Money For Nothing. The full length version goes on way too long, but the single edit (on the Money For Nothing comp) doesn't have the "***got" verse, so whatcha gonna do? Still, yeah, nowhere near the best DS song no matter how they edit it...

For migrane inducing annoyance nothing beats "Surfer Bird" by the Trashmen. I've had people threaten to kill me if I ever played that song in their presence again.

I love MSP but i would say this is fairly accurate. And that song is appalling.

That's debatable, and contrary to popular opinion. I've never met someone who actually 'hated' that song. Or the Manic Street Preachers for that matter. I just can't believe it was in that list.

No Guns and Roses? I'm insulted.

Someone should tell them that Shiny Happy People is actually about satirising the prescription of Prozac.

Bare in mind these people work as music critics and get payed well, I thought the meaning of that song would have been a given...but aparently, it's not. And they let these people tell us what to think :)

I think they actually mentioned it just before they shot to the clip of the guy completely missing it....beautiful :D

I don't think that's what the song is really about though. According to what I've read the chorus is a sarcastic take on a Chinese propaganda poster relating to the Tiananmen Square uprising.

You seem to miss the point that the subject matter concerns the songs being 'ANNOYING', and not necessarily 'bad'. In which case, 'over-play' and the frequent contexts in which a given song might appear are certainly valid reasons. As if a reason for finding a song 'annoying' could be INvalid, anyway. It's the most subjective factor there is...

You have to admit that telling a band from Georgia to "fuck off back to sunny California" makes the person saying it sound like an idiot though.
