I own some Kidz Bop and a Hilary Duff album. But I was nine or something when I bought those, gimme a break.
I have listened to a band because they had homosexual members. So....
I do own Marilyn Mansons first record on vinyl. I went out of my way to get that....and I haven't even listened to it yet. (On vinyl, anyway.)
It's possible that I like Tegan&Sara's demo tapes from when they were fifteen and on acid more than their current record, Sainthood.
Oh, and I forgot, I kind of like Que Sera Sera by Doris Day. Ha

I've come to accept that some people don't like Zep or Clapton or Stones, but no love for Sabbath or Hendrix? C'mon.

It's not that I dislike them, I just don't have any motivation to check them out. My priorities are too screwed.

i don't think YOUR priorities are screwed so much as most older people have a hard time accepting that younger generations will have different priorities and continue to branch away from what was at one time the defacto standard.

it was one thing for me and my peers to be checking out our parent's music, it's a whole other thing for teens today to STILL be checking out what is now their grandparent's music and being expected to worship it in the same way.

I personally agree with this bit. I think people give bands such as The Stones and Led Zep waaaaayyy too much credit. Thats not to say I don't like them, just that they ARE hugely overrated.

I think its a trend to like 'vintage' and old stuff these days.

That's because newer music sucks so bad.

It doesn't bother me that kids don't like the old stuff, just when they have absolutely no respect for it and refuse to accept that people like it because they actually like it and not just because it's "classic".

agreed. but that cuts in so many different directions too.

people who like it because they like it? fine
people who like it because they think they're supposed to? lame
people who hate it because they checked it out and it made their ears bleed? fine
people who hate it because they think everyone is supposed to like it and they want to show the world how different they are? lame

i could go on but that pretty much covers most bases. as the gap widens between the era when the 'classic' style was first in prominence and when the contemporary listeners become the generation of choice within popular culture i think we'll see even more warped reasoning as to why people to chose to listen or ignore.

I know it sounds like a generalization but I think "what is cool" has a big influence on the music and culture people associate themselves with. It's just not cool to like something your grandad probably loves and it's much more cool to write off everything from previous generations because it's not part of your generation.

Trash magazines like Alternate Press pretty much endorse this point of view, that it's hip to reject things because of the era they were made and the "square" people they appeal to.

I'm sure in the 60s youngsters felt the same way about what their parents liked and what not and that it's a common youth thing. But I think we're at a stage in civilization where it shouldn't be so hard to rate something based on the actual quality of it and not the closedminded preconceptions you have about it. But most young people are stupid so what can ya do?
