LastFM's Best of 2008

Best of 2008 – Last.fm
Discuss.

Best list I've seen this year, considering it's ranked by plays helps IMO.

Alfred 12-01-2008 09:40 AM

Fleet Foxes at number 4.

The amount of Coldplay is to be expected. Viva La Vida was probably the most hyped album this year.

FaSho 12-01-2008 09:42 AM

I was really suprised Sara Barellies and The Ting Ting's were so high.

Piss Me Off 12-01-2008 09:48 AM

Albums: Terrible list. Very MOR.
Artists: Bit better, good to see Santogold and Bon Iver being recognised.
Tracks: Go away Coldplay!

FaSho 12-01-2008 09:51 AM

It was excpected that Viva La Vida would be #1, but I didn't think they would dominate the whole list.
The only real miss was having Jack Johnson in the top albums IMO.

spark10036 12-01-2008 10:08 AM

Debut list:

happy to see Bon Iver there, The Last Shadow Puppets I expected them to be higher, and really glad for the number 1: great album indeed.

2008 releases:

everything as expected...

top tracks of 2008

no,no,no...not that I have anything against them, but too much Coldplay in there...and not just the good songs from the album.

Farfisa 12-01-2008 10:23 AM

Strange... I've never heard of MGMT till now, I guess I'm way out of the loop.

Comus 12-01-2008 10:26 AM

Quite possibly the worst list I've ever had the misfortune of throwing up on. Shows why 95% of all last.fm users are idiots.

Roygbiv 12-01-2008 10:44 AM

last.fm is more like mtv. it's all determined by popularity as opposed to quality.

You're not missing much.

At all.

adidasss 12-01-2008 11:14 AM

I didn't expect to see NIN on the albums list to be honest. Sounds a bit fishy to me. The rest is to be expected. My tastes coincide most with the debut artists list...

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-01-2008 11:28 AM

Out of the first two lists i've not heard a whole album by a single one of them. I don't see that changing any time soon.

Being out of the loop has never been so appealing.

I might listen to Last Of The Shadow Puppets eventually , just not in the mood for it right now.

ok...some people in here are starting to sound too bitter. maybe we should all lighten up for a while. we all have our opinions in music, and we all love the music we like, but calling millions of people idiots cause they don't like the same music as us it's just ignorant. honestly in my opinion, in that list there wasn't a single bad album, maybe not all of them are great, but they are not awful.
I think some of the people in here just seem to think offending others will impression . well it doesn't really...

p.s.: go to steven wilson's myspace account and take a look at his influences. even for a prog fan, u r not cool.

Nice to see some of our older members are so open-minded.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-01-2008 11:36 AM

I listed at least 15 albums I liked from this year in another thread.

And just because i've not heard any full albums doesn't mean i've not heard songs off them.

I'm so sorry I can seem to muster any enthusiasm to listen to Foals or Fleet Foxes for your benefit.

Pornographie Nouveau 12-01-2008 11:40 AM

That was pretty bad. **** you, general public.

Lawl. I don't care what you listen to or what you like. I just find it ironic how you pigeonhole your taste in music based on eccentric prejudices. Bon Iver might be overhyped to bollocks but his debut album was nonetheless excellent. If you don't enjoy it, that's not my business to care.

Most of that list is shite anyways.

spark10036 12-01-2008 11:52 AM

btw, when are we going to start the threat for our own best of the year?

It's not ignorant, it's hard but fair. Also I am cool, very cool.

As I said if a bad artist is incredibly incredibly popular it makes them an utter ****e artist, doesn't work the other way around however, if a bad artist is very unpopular it will still be a bad artist.

Give it a few more weeks and we'll get a comp going.

There already is a best of end-of-year list; jackhammer started it a few weeks ago.

I'm not pigeonholeing or prejudicing anything.

I don't see how just because i've not listened to 20 albums that everybody else thinks is good that makes me closed minded.

I just listen to what I want , I'm sure the Bon Iver album is excellent and one day I might listen to it , I just don't feel any urgency to check it out right now.

It doesn't. But this sure made it sound like you were implying something wholly different:

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-01-2008 12:33 PM

I'm implying that i'm not going to be listening to any of them anytime soon.

In other words there's nothing there that grabs me as being spectacularly amazing that warrants being heard before the list of albums I have already chosen to check out.

And i'm not in the loop when it comes to whatever pitchfork or NME or whoever are hyping these day. I prefer to go looking for and checking out stuff by myself.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-01-2008 12:37 PM

How is it prejudice?

Don't, at least three songs on it warrant your attention; Kids, Time to pretend and Electric feel, I consider all of them to be amongst the best singles this year. I believe you can youtube all of them.

I thought it was overproduced dross. And it doesn't help their cause that MGMT is one of the worst live acts in the country.

adidasss 12-01-2008 12:52 PM

Well you're wrong.

jackhammer 12-01-2008 12:52 PM

Albums- I only like two of them and Kooks? Jesus christ on a bike.

You're not trying hard enough...;)

spark10036 12-01-2008 03:44 PM

I find the MGMT album very good myself, but I haven't seen them live though, but from what I've seen from their Letermann gig, well they are not I would rank as a must see live band. anw their songs are more of a club kind of thing...I don't know if u get my point.let's say Ibiza kind of stuff.

sweet_nothing 12-01-2008 03:56 PM

I liked seeing Coldplay in there

Seltzer 12-01-2008 04:13 PM

Not the fucking Ting Tings! And I didn't think anyone listened to Jack Johnson anymore but I guess I'm wrong. I'm surprised to see Ghosts so high. I've still never heard anything by MGMT.

10,432,712 plays...aren't u at least curious?

dac 12-01-2008 06:23 PM

Instant loss of credibility with Jack Johnson. Entirely too much Coldplay, seeing as Viva is one of their worst two albums. Also The Last Shadow Puppets shouldn't be on there. I'm a huge Alex Turner fan but that album just wasn't that good.

adidasss 12-01-2008 06:26 PM

Em, you realize the list is based on play count right?

I can't say my curiosity is particularly piqued - MGMT sounds to me like just another flavour of the month band. I probably will check them out sometime but they're not high priority... especially when I still haven't heard Bon Iver.

Yeah, it's just kind of hard to react in any way but finding the faults you see in it, even if it is just people's opinions.
