Genres are nice to a point, even if it gets out of hand sometimes. Definitely more preferable to the sort of trivializing BS like "Oh, this band sounds like a cross between XXX and XXX", which makes it seem as if a group has nothing more to offer you than the bands it's being compared to.

I have no issue at all with genre specification of music.
I have found that it has helped me identify what it is that I am being asked to listen to, be that by individual recommendation or through my own research. There are few styles of music that I am not willing to give a listen to so in the end it may not matter but in genre classification at least leads me into the direction that I am listening to any given time. |

Of course genres and categories are needed to define things and assist in discovering what we will like, but it ****s me how so many music discussions turn into "____ aren't hardcore, they're grindcore!" etc etc. Is it really necessary?

i like screamo,
people assume the screamo i like encompasses bands like my chemical romance, fall out boy, etc etc. people say "all that shitty screamo music you like sucks dick." it bums me out, therefore i am against genres. |

I think genres are fairly helpful when you're trying to describe something to someone but I can't stand when a music store is broken up into so many different sections that it actually makes it harder to find things.
