Heh, a comment about this survey. I realize this is probably just an excercise in statistics. At least, I hope that's all it is, because this data seems kinda useless.
If you do statistics, it's important to plan ahead - you know, figure out what kind of data you want. How is it gonna be comparable? Do you have a control? It seems you want to somehow correlate understanding of maths with understanding or skill at music. Smells like hidden variables if you ask me.

Just as an example, what if the people who play instruments on average come from families with a significantly higher income than the ones who don't? Family income could then be a variable that helps explain the data, but it's not accounted for in the survey ("hidden variable"). You might end up saying that ability with an instrument correlates positively with understanding of maths when it should have been family income. Just an example of a variable - there could be many more .. Probably also much better examples.

i'm sure they don't work in some insane statistics company.
i'm sure it is a highschool/university paper to see if musicians excel at math (which, i'm told that if you can read and write music, you are generally pretty good at math.)

It's a good thing to be aware of, though. Many don't realize how much crappy statistics there are around, even in science (I'm doing biology).
People tend to believe in numbers and fancy graphs, so .. I'm just saying. Be cautious.

1.) a.Are you a Musician? No. b. What instrument(s) do you play? I dabble in bass. I'm absolutely horrible. 2.) What Genre of music do you listen to/play? Listen to anything that sounds good to me. /vague. 3.) If you play an instrument, at what age did you start playing? Brought up in a very musical family. I was always banging on keys and whatnot. 4.) How would you rate your performance in math classes during high school? I failed Alegbra I, integrated. I'm taking it again and got a high 80. I was also constantly stoned in my freshman year. Generally though, I'm more of an English person. 5.) What was the last math class you took in high school? Algebra I, again. |

1) Yes, bass, keyboards, vocals 2) Psychedelia, Art Rock, Punk, Post-Punk. Bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Flaming Lips, The Clash, etc. 3) Bass this year by instructor, keyboards/piano self taught since I was 12 4) I always take honors courses and get B-/B's. My school is a bitch and gives barely any compensation for taking AP/Honors so this has killed my GPA and QPA. 5) I'm in Pre-Calc Honors right now. |
