I just went with 1979
Not for any huge reason....purely to make a decision.
A lot of good post-punk came out that year.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Beatles - Abbey Road
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
The Kinks - Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)
Amon Duul - Phallus Dei
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma
Soft Machine - Second
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Led Zeppelin - I and II
Fleetwood Mac - English Rose
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Sly - Stand!
Can - Monster Movie
Yes - S/T
Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline
CCR - Willy and the Poor Boys
Allman Brothers Band - Debut S/T
Os Mutantes - Mutantes
Pentangle - Basket of Light
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Do not forget the wealth of famous events including Woodstock.

Meh, I just went with 2006.

Matisyahu - Youth
Underoath - Define The Great Line
He Is Legend - Suck Out The Poison
Alexisonfire - Crisis
Cancer Bats - Birthding The Giant
Bob Dylan - Modern Times
Norma Jean - Redeemer

It's also the average of 2005 and 2007, the two years the Maylene released their albums.

I think 2005-present have all been solid years in music.

I picked 1996 (I know, probably much too recent for many of your opinions). I thought of all the years when my favourite albums have come out and that was the year where most did. (But not all.)

I chose 1998:

Boards of Canada - Music has the Right to Children
Tortoise - TNT
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea

It was the first that came to mind. If I could re-pick, my next choice would be 1967, purely for Sgt. Pepper's and The Velvet Underground & Wilco. We didn't know it then, but those two albums would change music history.

Sorry, finished re-reading my Wilco review a few seconds ago. I'm really not at my best today.
