I thought his solo debut, College Dropout, was enjoyable. It hasn't proven to be something lasting, that I've listened to much since it came out, but it was fairly good, poppy hip-hop.

Comments like the one linked in the OP are just his attempts to stir the pot, keep attention on him. Like a carnival barker. I don't hate him for it, nor do I respect it. I think it's silly but harmless.

Death's a bit extreme, I just wish something somewhat unpleasant would happen to him, like he loses his car keys down a drainpipe or something

He plays the game very well. You would be surprised by how controversial artists seem to be in order for them to be in the spotlight. One word: Marketing.

A lot of people hate Kanye. Personally, I respect the guy. He's another one of the very few artists today who not only pretty much exclusively write their own material, but produce it too. Sure, his lyrics might not be particularly good (hell, they bad, man), but his mixing is top notch and there aren't that many producers in hip-hop today with either his style or his panache. In the end, the choice is simple: you either tolerate mainstream rap, or you don't. If you do, then you gotta have some respect for Kanye, because he's a head and shoulders above most of the competition.

I don't particularly like his music, but he knows how to survive in the world of mainstream hip-hop and profit from it. Good for him.

Kanye West tends to piss you off a lot less if you're not sitting in your room bombarded my MySpace News.

I love everything he puts out, I don't buy anything but I enjoy him quite a bit.

He pisses me off as a person, but I wouldn't want him dead, because then he woudn't be able to make more music, and I like his music a lot.
