Artists who go solo and have GREAT bands! (albums, quote)

The Boys Next Door were pretty ****, so when Nick Cave formed the Birthday Party and then the Bad Seeds after that he took massive steps in the right direction.

Johnny Thunders went on to make some brilliant music after leaving the New York Dolls as well.

And then there's Iggy Pop...

The only ones mentioned so far that do are Bob Mould & Nick Cave as far as I can remember.

To add one of my own , well I quite liked Jarvis Cocker in Relaxed Muscle but everybody else seems to have forgotten them.

Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" has the same quality (albeit a much cleaner sound) as all three stooges albums.

Someone mentioned Johnny Thunders, I'll second that.

Kevin Sheilds' 'Lost In Translation' tracks were pretty good, even if thats the bulk of his post-loveless output.

Frank Black's first album is decent, and The Breeders first two are better than the Pixies' last two, if you ask me.

The Lyres weren't as raw as DMZ, but I find them more melodically satisfying.

There's alot more, but I'm bored of thinking. Has anyone heard Eddie Argos from 'Art Brut's other bands? I've been meaning to order some albums.

Only Mick Harvey really was in both.

Rowland S. Howard & Tracy Pew have been in both but they were only in The Bad Seeds for less than a year.

Nick Cave didn't write every song with the Bad Seeds as his backing band alone, but I still think it counts as going solo. I mean, virtually every Nick Cave and the Bads Seeds album (with a few exceptions) has Cave's face alone on the cover - a lot of them therefore used his face, and not those of the Bad Seeds to promote their music in a way. It's a solo career in my eyes, but I guess it all boils down to how you define such a thing
