What makes you think NWA were seriously endorsing those things? Do you think Slayer seriously endorses serial killing and nazism and whatnot? I think both are just examples of people trying to make hard-edged music with appropriately hard-edged lyrics. I don't take it particularly seriously. I'm pretty sure Ice Cube has a degree in architecture, he's not actually some violent gangsta.

I think appalling is a little strong. Sure it is overwrought, ridiculously bombastic and OTT but they at least they subverted the classic pop song structure. I myself am not a huge fan but it is far from appalling. Annoying, overplayed and overhyped-definitely. Appalling. Sorry I can't agree.
