Icon Of Coil-Machines Are Us (2004)

Pop music given an Electro Industrial bent. Not everyones cup of tea at all but you put this on any half decent club and the naysayers will be tapping their feet for sure.

Industrial usually conjures up images of dark twisted monolithic slabs of noise but it is also repetition and pounding beats. This approach to industrial is massive in Europe with a whole slew of bands including Wumpscut and Istans treading similar ground, mixing eurodance/trance with a harder edge to give a perfect antidote to the usual chart dance fodder. Deep bass tones, pulsing synthetics and social commentary may not provide the most ambitious or original music but sometimes you just want to crank your system up and get the bass vibrating the room.

Infectious Grooves - Mas Borracho (2000)

Quite simply this album is the album the Red Hot Chili Peppers wish they had made. Out of the ashes of the seminal Suicidal Tendencies arose the Punk Funk jam of IG. Disgustingly brutish slap happy bass, plenty of skanking waca waca guitar and a healthy injection of speed throughout gives rise probably THE best example of the much maligned Funk crossover genre.

This is not about TRYING to use Funk as a cheap excuse to sound a little different. Oh no. These guys pay homage to the forefathers and then up the ante x 10. If you like early Chili's or fancy something that is funk, dirty and noisy then get it and play loud.

The title track (and one of the more commercial tracks on the album):

Inner Circle - Forward Jah Jah Children (Compilation)

While the world was in the thrall of Bob Marley mania in the 70's, Inner Circle were Jamacias biggest Reggae band and this exhaustive double C.D is proof why. The first disc features their original singer on the first couple of tracks and even then when Jacob Miller joined the band were content to knock out standard covers and although it is still great Reggae, for Miller this was'nt enough. Following dub master Augustus Pablo around on his frequent recording & producing duties, Miller was seeing at first hand the craft that was neede to produce non derivative and hard edged Reggae. The second disc backs this up with classics such as 'Tenement Yard' and 'Sinners' proving that there is much more to Reggae than Marley (although that is'nt a criticism of Marley). If you like Marley and want to dip your toes further into classic 70's Reggae then this is essential and a timely reminder of one of Jamacias finest vocalist's.

Iron Maiden - Live After Death (1985)

So this is where it all starts. Fourteen years old, parents close to splitting (they did 3 months after I discovered this album) and a typical teenager adrift and directionless. A chance in depth conversation with a casual school friend about his choice of music on his Sony Walkman produced a friendship now into it's 22nd year, quite possibly the reason why I am posting on this very forum and a Tattoo on the base of my neck!

Every single tick, background chant and song intro is indelibly marked on my brain from this double live album which (even without the emotional baggage) is one of the finest live Metal albums ever and a superlative example of a band at their absolute peak.

I don't expect kudos points with me including this album but that does'nt matter. Music should primarily be about you the listener and the context that you view it in. 'Live After Death' is the most important album to me by far and that has'nt seemed to change over 20 years later. An album I will treasure and hold dear to me.. and Eddie is cool as fuck!

I bought this album myself when I was 16 years old and I was really in to Maiden. I have 12 cds in my collection, but my love for them just died out as the years went by. the truth is that this is one of their best cause they are a band which perform great at concerts. I'll never forget the first time I heard the live versions of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Flight of Icarus", and like u jackhammer I'd say that it was Iron Maiden that really got me in to music. they are a great band for angry teenagers...

Jackie O Motherfucker - Flags Of The Sacred Harp (2005)

The Sacred Harp is a collection of traditional American Hyms and Accapella music from the late 1800's that experimental collective JOMF decided to interpret and add their own spin on it (4 of the albums 7 tracks are Trad.). What emerges is an incredibly layered Folk album that is nothing like a Folk album you would expect. It deviates from it's source and add's reverb and shimmering soundscapes, snippets of broken vocals and a lazy droney strum. However throughout the album it always nothing less than warm and inviting. The exquisite Male and Female vocals coupled with the albums experimental bent provide a very original and richly rewarding album. One track is never enough. You need to listen to this as a whole and immerse yourself in it's intricate layers.

This is not from the album but it's a good pointer as what to expect:

Jesu - Conqueror (2007)

Does having a Metal asthetic mean that you have sacrifice melody and ambience? Certainly not in the case of Jesu. Combining the lazy vocals phrasing of Shoegaze, Electronic Ambience and a dose of crushing but never overpowering riffs, Jesu are a band that could appeal to metal heads and those who dabble in the left of centre sounds.

Yes it's melancholic, it's slow sweet perfume works it's way into you. It's both incredibly rich and hugely cavernous. Justin Broadrick's ever increasing fascination with soundscapes is a joy to hear after over 25 years in the music business (his previous bands Napalm Death and Godflesh were expansions on previous sounds) and Conqueror is a seriously good record.

I have posted this vid before (apologies):
