I don't think there's anything wrong with liking any of those bands. I just think there's nothing personal about that list because all the song choices are the most obvious ones.

And what I mean is, that if all you listen to after 1979 is Bon Jovi, and you tote around that sort of opinion seriously, than you are part of the reason people like Eric Clapton, who have done nothing bust dust off old blues licks and ruin Bob Marley songs way too much credit, and overshadowing bands who deserve it. I guess not ruining music....but just being another body claiming to be into music, and then I come to find out hes just another boring Clapton fan. Basically, there was a rock critic who once said, "Nostalgia is the most insidious corruptor of great rock n' roll", and this is sort of an example of that.

So, no, the Beatles aren't destroying music, but I despise Clapton and for me, hes been ruining music for 40+ years.
wholeheartedly agreed, he has given the world nothing but hackneyed blues licks and it is disgusting who many little fan boys fawn over him.
Clapton is god? i think not
I wouldnt include him in a top 1000 guitarists list let a lone in the top ten as he so often is, boring as ****

If someone has only heard these type of bands and popular music in their lifetime then this list is as personal as any.

Obvious choices are usually good choices if perhaps safe and less interesting.

Who wants to read a list of songs they've never heard of? I agree a mix of popular and more "personal" as you put it selections is best, but most of us are lying if we said we didn't like at least half those songs at sometime in our life.

I think you misunderstand what I was saying slightly.

When I was referring to obvious choices I wasn't talking about the bands I was talking about the song choices by those bands.

It's like every choice of song on his list was the most well known song by that band. That's why I said it lacks the personal touch.

I mean surely at least one other song by any of those bands must stand out for other reasons.

Cool

You know, if y'all would put together a little list of 25 artists/bands, and a certain album that they've done, maybe us n00bs could tell you our fav 1 or 2 songs, if we had any favs from that one. Not only that, but maybe some of the older members could sort of 'pair up' with the n00bs that, like, match their style.

Either that, or i could post another boringly generic list...

I really like this list. Even though theres obvious bands, I like reading about songs that I haven't heard of, it opens doors. I mean, if someone thinks a song/band/album is so good it can surpass some great songs that I like, I will assume it has lots of musical merit, and will be inclined to check it out.

As opposed to clatonisgod's list, which is all stuff I've heard year before, and thus bores me.
