MB Essential Guide Poll: ***Blur***
Blur "Blur remind us of the days of the Kinks and Small Faces with a little smidgen of Sex Pistols while encompassing a fresh approach to their unique power/pop/punk plateau. Harmless witty pop that has bite." Zombeels Recommended Tracks: 1) Parklife (Parklife) 2) Universal (The Great Escape) 3) Country House (The Great Escape) 4) Tender (13) / This is a Low (Parklife) 5) On Your Own (Blur) Recommended Album: Modern Life is Rubbish Similar Artists: The Kinks Pulp Further Info: Blur (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Blur – Listen free at Last.fm http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:j9fpxqq5ld0e~T1 Final Thoughts: "I think album wise they're not all that, but i can't knock their ability for releasing brilliant singles. Their songs unite thousands, whether it's the pop of Girl and Boys or the rock of Song 2 are known by everyone. Props to them, unlike their peers they developed their sound as well." Piss me Off "They manage to blend a nice mix of quirky songs such as Parklife or Country House amidst some great writing on This is a Low or Universal. Never ones to take themselves too seriously, they have let themselves create the music that they want, allowing for a consistently steady change and growth down the line." ToeAndno "There is something very British about Blur that I like that, while leading to lower sale figures on the American market, also brought something very special and charming to their music." The Monkey [Charmless Men: The Monkey, ToeAndno, Piss Me Off, Sweet Nothing, Minstrel, Zombeels]

I'm not so sure if I want Blur to be done. I like a lot of their music but I can think of many more deserving artists TBH.

Deserving?
If someone asked you about what would be a good start into getting into Blur, you'd say 'sorry, I can think of more deserving artists'? Lol. This is not a hall of fame or a reflection on how good/bad the artists are.

It's not a guide to essential artists, though. It's an essential guide to artists, which means it is a place to go if you wanna start out exploring a particular person or band. Not a list of people you should be listening to. Helping people get a good foothold in the artists they want to listen to and explore.

Best songs: Parklife (Parklife), Country House (The Great Escape), Charmless Man (The Great Escape), Beetlebum (Blur), Tender (13)
Best album: The Great Escape Similar artists: The Kinks, Small Faces There is something very British about Blur that I like that, while leading to lower sale figures on the American market, also brought something very special and charming to their music. Damon Albarn's songwriting abilities far surpassed Noel Gallagher's.

Top 5 Tracks:
1) Parklife (Parklife) 2) Universal (The Great Escape) 3) This is a Low (Parklife) 4) Chemical World (Modern Life is Rubbish) 5) End of a Century (Parklife) Recommended Album: Modern Life is Rubbish Similar Artists: Supergrass Pulp The Kinks I've always loved Blur. They were an important part of my teen years. But now that I am older I appreciate them even more. They manage to blend a nice mix of quirky songs such as Parklife or Country House amidst some great writing on This is a Low or Universal. Never ones to take themselves too seriously, they have let themselves create the music that they want, allowing for a consistently steady change and growth down the line.

I haven't listened to an enormous amount by them as i'm not a huge fan but what the hell.
Tracks: 1. Advert (Modern Life Is Rubbish): My favourite song by them, it's nothing life affirming but it's a lot of fun, and can get stuck in my head for days. 2. This Is A Low (Parklife): Gorgeous song, and so british it makes me want to weep Bovril. 3. Bank Holiday (Parklife): A proper knees-up of a song, must have been on speed when they wrote it. 4. Music Is My Radar (Greatest Hits): Sounds like the Gorillaz and i love the Gorillaz, nuff said. 5. Crazy Beat (Think Tank): A great garage rock tune, on that one at least who needs Graham? Album: Modern Life Is Rubbish: I do have to admit i think it's overated, but it's their best for sure, and home to some great pop songs. Similar Artists: Pulp: Knew their way around a good pop song too. Suede: Vocal wise they're quite similar.... kinda. Another brillaint british band at the time. I think album wise they're not all that, but i can't knock their ability for releasing brilliant singles. Their songs unite thousands, whether it's the pop of Girl and Boys or the rock of Song 2 are known by everyone. Props to them, unlike their peers they developed their sound as well. |
