Default Genius? GENIUS!

A new tool (called Genius, lolz) recently came out for iTunes that lets you assemble a new playlist (from various artists) with the click of a button. It uses music that sounds similar by comparing songs in your library to each other, and then making a playlist out of them.

So far, it's worked impeccably for me, but I've discerned that if you don't have enough of a certain genre it won't be able to compile as large a playlist. The idea behind it is similar to Pandora, Last.FM and other free radio websites, but everything you listen to is YOURS to begin with, which is awesome. The tool itself is free, too.

Here's an example playlist made by selecting "In The Name Of The Father" by Black Grape:
  1. Black Grape - In The Name Of The Father
  2. Kula Shaker - Hey Dude
  3. Pulp - Sorted for E's and Wizz
  4. Ian Brown - Dolphins Were Monkeys
  5. Suede - Animal Nitrate
  6. The Stone Roses - Ten Story Love Song
  7. James - She's a Star
  8. Eels - Susan's House
  9. Mansun - Wide Open Space
  10. Blur - The Universal
  11. The Jesus and Mary Chain - April Skies
  12. Primal Scream - Nitty Gritty
  13. The Stone Roses - Elephant Stone
  14. Black Grape - Kelly's Heroes
  15. New Order - Ruined in a Day
  16. Soft Cell - Bedsitter
  17. Ian Brown - Keep What Ya Got
  18. Primal Scream - Swastika Eyes
  19. Happy Mondays - Loose Fit
  20. The Charlatans - Just When You Think Things Are Over
  21. Kula Shaker - Govinda
  22. Echo and the Bunnymen - Nothing Lasts Forever
  23. Oasis - Who Feels Love?
  24. James - Born of Frustration
  25. Black Grape - Submarine
I'm having so much fun with this. I can see using this for parties all the time.

Laziness, I'd rather put playlists together myself. Neat idea though.

I can't make playlists worth half a donkey's ass-crack. Easier this way. By far.

Lol, Genius is a poor 'smart' playlist, anyone can make a better one.

I had to leave the damn thing on all night just for it to 'read' my library.

I can't believe iTunes went to version 8 and yet barely anything new was added, and nothing exciting at that.

I still had to download it to try the new version out, though I suspected it would still be poor.

I share lucifer sam's enthusiasm for Genuis. I've tried it out with several songs and it's made better playlist than i ever could. Unlike me it doesn't always use the usual suspects. I can see this coming handy when I am in the car with my friends.
