99 Most Underrated Voices in Music
Here is a list of people that I think are sometimes overlooked when it comes to their vocals, in no set order.
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/...Imb0e/610x.jpg #99 - Jarvis C0cker Pulp's front man and Michael Jackson's rear man. This man can show off his voice both in the studio and live on stage. Whether it is his high squeaks, his 'oooOOOoooOOOh's or his low, creepy whisper, Jarvis' fantastic vocals add a whole new dynamic to his great writing. Sadly overlooked in his heyday, when most of the attention was focused on Blur, Oasis and the like, he showed that he didn't need to be cool, he could just open his mouth and let his gift do the rest. Pulp are usually remembered for great hits and looking like geeks, but seldom revered for having the best voice in 'Britpop'. Check out Pulp live at Glastonbury, 1995. |
should be higher, higher I say!

In no particular order :D
|
I like his 'tone' and his brilliantly observant lyrics. Vocally he is not the best but JC is as talented and acerbic as Morrissey fo sho.
|
Not alot of people are as good as Moz, but he has a great voice for pop.

Check out Lisa Gerrard. Was the vocalist for the sublime Dead Can Dance and has also had an extensive solo career. Some may know her as the voice for the Gladiator soundtrack but that would be doing her an extreme disservice to base her career on that work alone. Her most recent album is as a vocalist for Klaus Schulze of Krautrock fame on his last release. Badly underrated and even under appreciated. I caught Lisa live about 18 months ago and was left spellbound by her vocal delivery and depth. I have memories of reading that she had a 5 octave range.

EDIT - How did I forget Ullyses? |
This thread looks like it's going to be awesome. :)

Bill Callahan of Smog fame. Another who was astonishingly good live.
|
^ He's the best of the best in my humble opinion.

http://www.magictv.tv/wp-content/upl...ranberries.jpg #98 - Dolores O'Riordan Lead singer for The Cranberries. I have been a fan of Dolores ever since I first heard her sing Linger and Dreams back in 1994. Unfortunately most people were more concerned with her numerous hair styles then her talent. A lot of people 'lose' their accents when they sing but Dolores style maintains the lovable Irish sound. I really love the way she sings and absolutely adore the tone to her voice, not the best vocally but nobody else really sounds like her. A wonderful and unique voice. |

Morrissey is definitely an underrated vocalist.
|
By who? Certainly not on here.
|
He's underrated on here, he could wipe with the floor with Jeff Buckley and no one gives him credit for it.
|
No one even talks about Plant, Morrissey gets just as much gushing over him as Buckley, but whatever.
|
Not as a vocalist.

I hope David McAlmont makes this list :)

http://i.rollingstone.com/assets/rs/...0324684_lg.jpg #97 - Cat Stevens There's something I really love about Cat Steven's voice. There are some songs of his that I cannot imagine anyone doing well, not that they include amazing vocal performances but it's just the way he sings them. He can display such warmth, feeling, regret and melancholy, usually within one song and usually more than one of the above at once. Most of the time his voice is controlled so well and then he will suddenly have a quick outburst. Well, outburst isn't the right word. He never quite shouts, but when he raises his voice you can feel the frustration and passion steam out of him. Man I could listen to him sing all day. |
John Martyn had better be on this list...;)
