After a lot of time spent thinking, ifuring out code, writing, hunting components, reading up on various forum threads, I finally have a foobar that's working and looking like I want it.
Screenie 1 - Looking at Caravan's albums from the 1970s. Screenie 2 - Shows how compilation albums appear and the visualization tab in the bottom right. I'm quite satisfied with the library tree on the left hand side of the screen. I've set up some filters (ex. for "1970s" and "MA Compilations") and they work flawlessly

Since I screwed up my Itunes last week by trying to move stuff around that shouldnt have been. I have tried to make a vow never to go back to Itunes.
I downloaded Foobar at first and I really like its low memory usage and how fast it is about playing songs. I also tried mediamonkey but didnt like it at all. But after downloading pretty much everything I could I settled with Winamp... I am still tinkering with foobar, I just need to understand it before I can really start using it. Winamp everything I like but the speed at which I click a song it take about 5 seconds for it to play because of all the music I have. It plays songs back to back with ease it only takes some time if I click a specific song. [IMG] |

Cadrian, since you have a sizeable collection, you should take a look at Winamp's Smart View function if you haven't. Just look at the left, you can right-click f.ex "Audio" and then choose "New Smart View" or something along those lines. You can set up filters or "queries" for how you want to access your music.
It's pretty easy to figure out and let's you find stuff a little easier. Also when you have a large library, the search bar from Winamp is quite handy as scrolling doesn't work very well - you know what I mean. I love the fact that the winamp search also searches for stuff included in path/filename (although searches in big libraries are a bit slow). You can get the same functionality for Foobar, for example the Columns UI panel Quicksearch Panel. You can see that searchbox here in my screenshot at the top of my foobar with a light red background coloration. The smart view functionality in Winamp, should you come to like it, is also easily replicated in Winamp, also demonstrated in the screenie on the left hand side. And don't forget this thread : http://www.musicbanter.com/lounge/47...scussions.html

Ya I noticed the search ability to search file information.... Which has been great it catches a lot of stuff that just isn't taged just right. Foobar is the future for me.... It has to be. Its the only player that doesn't lag on me at all. I just gotta figure out how to script it or find a skin or something I like. I am just really bad at scripting and programing. I am also bad about tweaking stuff I have no business messing with and ruining everything. So Foobar is a real curse for me in that factor, considering there is no limit to what you can do. |

If that's a problem for you, then you might want to check out Musicbrainz Picard which is supposed to be really good tagging software. Just make sure you try it out on a few files to make sure it does what you want before you apply it to your whole collection!

i agree - a compulsively tagged collection is essential if you want to make the most of foobar.
that way, you can make a playlist that updates automatically, and which contains only tracks by australian bands from albums released between 1984 and 1992 that are in the genres "punk" or "rock" and have a rating of 4 or greater. just an example...
