100 Things That I Love About Music
Yes I am mirroring Urban's (admittedly magnificent) 100 but I thought I would put the optimism back in music and revel in the good things about music.
http://www.mentalfloss.com/wp-conten..._Fireworks.jpg #100. Hearing a piece of music for the first time The CD looks intriguing. A friends recommendation. A music blog find. No matter what the situation, that first listen of a great album is a cause for celebration. It's a personal triumph. You have found something that is now part of your life and hopefully forever. Whether it lift's your spirits, connects with you emotionally or just get's your damn foot tapping there are only a few things in life that can top that first listen. |

Great thread idea by the way! |
mmm, #100 is truth. I look back on those memories as I do the great lays I've had. When I hear a song and I get the chills because it is so beautiful while my mind just becomes a sponge, I no longer realize anything that is happening around me and I soak it all in.
I remember the first time I heard "Love, Reign O'er me"... my mind was having orgasms, it was splendid. These lists are like the battle between good and evil!!! We love to think about the bad stuff but rarely take the time to remember the good. |

That will be touched upon at a later date.

Agreed. I think it's easier to tire of albums that you love right off the bat. Albums that require a few plays to really get into tend to be the ones that become your real favorites. |
I'd say your #100 was my #1... which leaves me intrigued as to what your #1 will be
|
Is this a jackhammer only thing like Urbans, or are we able to input our favorite things? (brown paper packages tied up with strings)

What better excuse have you got to listen to some banging guitar riff and throw shapes in your living room like you are 14 (unless you are 14 of course)? In no other hobby can you basically mime to your faves. Ever tried air drawing? Or Air acting? What about air driving? nope does'nt hold up. Air guitar wins AND it's acceptable. <3 |
That guy's shorts are hilarious.

A music lovers dream. The advent of MP3's has now enabled us to amass even more music in an easily stored format AND even find plenty of rare, long lost gems courtesy of the web. A purist will bemoan the lack of quality (which I agree with to a certain extent) but I would rather have those lost classics on MP3 than not at all. Whacking 2000 tracks onto a piece of plastic smaller than a pound coin is nothing short of a godsend to us music lovers. All hail the MP3. |
The one glorious event that galvanises fans is the live gig. That feeling of everyone being there to share in your love of a band is a powerful emotion and there is nothing that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck than waiting for your favourite band to make an entrance. If you are extremely lucky, you may have been at one of those gigs that is remembered forever by all that saw it. BTW Spot the musician in the crowd at this Clash gig. Easy really. |
Shane MacGowan in the bottom right corner.

Some good. Some bad. Some magical. Some painful. Music is one of those rare commodities that intrinsically binds itself to memories. Sure you can remember a good film or good book but there is no other stimuli or memory that you can remember. Listening to a certain piece of music can have so many memories attached to it and that is an amazingly powerful and personal tool. |
I'm trying to convince myself that air guitar is dumb but I just can't do it... its power is that great!!!!

see, I can convince myself that air drums suck... I can actually start doing it and look around to make sure nobody else saw me. Air guitar, I'll be looking around in hopes that somebody saw me... unless I'm at work, that never looks good.
|
I think i air-bass the most, which makes you look very weird.

Actually, this could just as easily go into the "100 things that piss me off..." thread, for one of the reasons you mentioned; the bad & painful memories. How many songs have been ruined because we associate them with bad times? |

I agree that some albums can be enjoyable in a masochistic way, but I could list dozens of albums that I sold because I couldn't listen to them anymore... |
Having a huge music collection is immediately cool even if half of it is dross. Of course my collection is flawless and is held up as a prime example of good taste*Nevertheless there is nothing more satisfying than a wall full of C.D's that you cannot help but show off whenever someone is around. Only a wall full of DVD'S is as cool and of course I have both. A collection of stamps is crap because you can only look but not touch. Trainspotter's journals are geek encrypted and coin collections really should be cashed in. So expansive music collections deserve their rightful place. * Tongue in cheek required for this. |
I wish I could have all mine in one room where it would look good :(
|
Even though I am a big film fan, sometimes a 4 minute music vid packs in more inventiveness, guile and originality than your average Hollywood blockie. It is no coincidence that music vid directors are highly sought after in Hollywood. Why wait for 90 minutes for a conclusion when 4 will do? Make sure you watch it (and yes it is the official video) WARNING FOR ALL THE TEENAGERS: EXPLICIT SCENES. For everyone else: a time to lament ;) |
Damn Lee i hope that's your collection? That's like a geek's wet dream!
I'm quite proud i'm finally running low on shelf space for my CD's, i'll be leaving it all behind for uni but in a way i can start anew, can't wait. |
Seriously. Who does'nt like a bit of badass funk? Sexy, gutsy and dirty. |
Reggae is probably the only music that A) I can put on at anytime of the day and B) I know will make me all warm and fuzzy inside. I know I keep extolling the virtues of Reggae but this is because I am correct. Never look for the musicianship in Reggae. That is not what it is about. It is music with passion. It is music that is fun. It is music with a message. It is music with great big fuck off basslines. It is music that never has to impress you, it only needs to move you. Get that and you will love Reggae forever. |
oh reggae
good choice its hard to go wrong there |

Why? Because they give me endless enjoyment with their narrow minded views. Now as many of you may know, I like plenty of Metal but that is just one aspect of my listening personality. I am here refering to the 'pure' metalhead. The one who instantly dismisses every other genre of music because it's too pussy. The one who constantly invents sub genres to look cool. The one with all the patches on his jackets yet he knows barely nothing about half the bands on there. The one who does the stupid 'devil' sign. I never did this at fourteen, let alone now. They do genuinely make me smile. Bless them. PS if you are fourteen and reading this-you are forgiven. If you are 40 and reading this. Please open your front door, it's the real world out there and not middle earth sorry to say. |
Grace Slick with the women too! Love her voice.
