#65. Rick Rubin

From starting the hugely influential Def Jam records at the age of 22 whilst still at college to now being Co-head of Columbia Records, rubin is one of the very few Producers to actually care about the music, set bands on their way and just happen to produce some of the best albums of the last 20 years. All this is all the more remarkable as Rubin has himself admitted, knows nothing technical and just 'has an ear for music'. Sure there are many other great producers out there such as John Leckie but I absolutely love rubin's 'sound' which is clean, precise with fantastic snare sounds and less of the fiddly stuff. His range of genres is to be applauded and damnit I want his job. I have an ear Here is a small example of his producer talents:

As if I need an excuse to post this beauty:

This brings back some memories:

One of my favourite albums:

Stunning track:

Disclaimer: Having Linkin Park and Audioslave on your C.V is a minus point but the pluses outweigh them

#64. Britain's Musical Contribution

We often have our nose rubbed in by bigger countries as to how inconsquential we are and our 'Illusions Of Grandeur' but damn it. for such a small country we have provided some of the most iconic, best selling and influential music ever. America aruguably gave us many many genres of popular music but Britain has assimilated them and used them to our own advantages. Of course we have the staple bands who are still popular to this day:

The Beatles
Rolling Stones
The Kinks
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Who etc

but then we stole your ideas again and brought you:

Sex Pistols
Joy Division
Echo & The Bunnymen
Iron Maiden
The Clash
New Order etc

It has admittedly been a leaner time for worldwide successful British artists of late (Coldplay being an exception) but I am proud of our heritage.

DISCLAIMER: yes yes I have missed out on lot's of bands but don't bother putting them here. I will just delete them.

#63. Personal Music Players

Ever since I got my first personal cassette player back in the 80's, I can never be without some sort of personal player. It has many functions: You don't get to hear the inane ramblings of those other folk who populate our world with their jaundiced views. You can get to hear all your latest music without the cat jumping on you or your kids booting you in the head. You can look like a complete fool with your oversized headphones and huge grin on your face. You can also knacker your hearing but that's another thing entirely.

I 100% agree. The 25 minute walk to class everyday would be unbearable if I didn't have my mp3 player. I probably look like I fool though, because I tend to get into the music when I listen to it on my mp3 player. For some reason I don't think anyone else can hear me.

I don't know what I would do without a PMP...I had a few Walkmen, then Discman(my first one was like 300 bux in 1987), and now an Ipod and I listen to it for about 4 hours day since I don't drive and have to walk everywhere...Music makes the walks in the snow even more enjoyable and takes my mind off the cold in the winter...It makes things more beautiful to me...Good call.

Apparently I get beeped quite a few times by friends in cars but when the cans are on, I'm in a world of my own.

#62 Intimacy

This can work on many levels. You can use Music as an extension of your emotions to express an intimacy that is difficult to convey. You can share an intimacy with the artist as they lay themselves bare and you connect on some level. You could just be taking a stroll and listening to some tunes and just feel intimate with your surroundings. Very few forms of Media move us in so many ways. Music is probably the ultimate.

#61 Gentle Soothing Properties

Yes you can keep your obvious jokes I.E your music is so boring I always fall asleep etc. I am talking about those times that Music is your friend and it soothes and calms. Many times when I was a youngster (circa 1851), I fell asleep to music after a particularly trying day (looking back what the hell was I worried about compared to now?) and even now when I spend the usual bi-monthly night on the sofa, I put some music on to help me fall asleep. It's funny how I invariably use the same music for this too.
