There wasn't really ever one specific thing for me, I've just always loved album art as long as I can remember. As a little kid in the early 80s I was fascinated by gatefold artwork on albums my older brother owned like Close to the Edge by Yes or The Wall by Pink Floyd. As a teenager in the early 90s I was a huge electro-industrial fan and loved the art of Wax Trax and Mute bands like KMFDM, Die Warzau and Nitzer Ebb. When I was majoring in graphic design in the late 90s I found myself loving a lot of electronica artwork, especially from labels like Ninja Tune and Instinct. In the past 10 years or so I've found myself getting more into older album artwork, especially jazz from the 50s and 60s, but I love a lot of current album art too. The album whose artwork I remember being impressed by most recently was Burial's "Untrue" which I downloaded just the other day. It's one of those albums where I really may have to buy a hard copy because I liked the artwork so much.

For me simple is the best, i dont think much of the album art of Iron Maiden and the type of prog albums you mentioned (though i respect them), for me good album art has to be striking and in your face yet very simple. Some of my favourites.
They tend to be arty bands |

#75. Kylie Minogues Arse. Bless the day she picked up a microphone. You could eat your dinner off that for christ sakes.

#74. Lemmy. Quite possibly the coolest man on the planet. Completely billy whizzed up. Floating on a Jack Daniels lake and still standing straight. He has also happened to be in two of my favourite bands of all time (and another mods Namely: Hawkwind and Motorhead and STILL remained true to himself. He will never go down as one of the finest musicians to grace music but he will go down as one of the most sincere. Let's listen once more eh? (one of my early faves):

I wholeheartedly agree with numbers 74 and 75. Lemmy kicks ass. Motorhead head has been among my favorite bands and now, I have to say, Hawkwind is quickly on their way to joining them (thanks Jackhammer).
And, yeah, Kylie Minogue's ass is fantastic. |
