why? because firstly, they were the pioneers of everything you listen to today, they created new techniques such as the backwards tape echo, new arrangements, new sounds. i havent seen guns n roses do any of that.
secondly,7 consecutive number 1 albums (both sides of the atlantic) speaks for itself, again i havent seen roses do that. on top of that they are commonly seen as the greatest live rock band of all time by rock critics and muiscians alike.
roses "magnum opus" was november rain- zepelin had stairway to heavan.....no doubt which song wins that category.
zeppelin incorporated folk, blues, soul, funk, country, west coast psychedelia and even reggae into their sound- as far as i know GnR were pretty 1 dimensional.
so theres my arguement- no doubt you 'll have a reply to this.

Default Guns N' Roses rules

In my opinion, Guns N' Roses is the best rock band ever. The CD that I would get, if you already have Appetite for Destruction is definitely the greatest hits. It's got all of the best songs like Sweet Child o' Mine, Paradise City, Patience, Welcome to the Jungle etc.

You bet your ass Ill have a reply to that. Do you think I'll just roll over. First of all, don't think you get any credit from me defending Led Zeppelin, its not as if you havn't had tons or already argued points to choose from.

So ill bullet point the crap out of your argument since there seem to be alot of conventional wisdom inaccuracies:

1. "They were the pioneers of everything I listen to today" while you've got no idea what I listen to today, lets assume you meant they influenced everything today which is a load of crap. As previously mentioned on these boards "Zeppelin just did everything better than anyone else" so invention wasn't really their forte and come to think of it, Zeppelin got sued alot for ripping off other peoples songs (i.e. The Lemon Song)

2. You havn't seen G n' R do any of what invent the same things Led Zeppelin did? How can you invent anything someone else did. reminds me of a Christopher Walken skit on SNL ("I wrote this song after I heard it on the radio") while invention doesn't make a band great, we could say that G n' R was the first group to have an Fing Recorder on their record to have Axl screwing a chick put in the middle of a song (Rocket Queen)

3. No I've never seen it written anywhere that Zeppelin was the greatest live act. That was always (until well after Zeppelin was done touring) The Rolling Stones. It wasn't even contested until probably the late 80's early 90's, not that GnR was a great act live (when they showed up) it was never Led Zeppelin, only bias fanboy's like yourself will say that.

4. As far as November Rain is concerned. That songs for little girls and I don't know anyone who says that it was GnR's greatest hit. While not many songs match up with Stairway, to put it up against NR was a cheap shot. Paradise City is clearly their biggest song.

5. You forgot their aweful stab at salsa in the coda to Fool in the Rain. I don't know how their one dimensional, alot of things were just factored into rock songs. Alder used to include disco break beats, there was certainly blues rif***e as Slash was blues trained, folk influence certainly made Lies and its without question they they threw a whole lot of punk into their sound. Compare GnR to any other rock band at the time, better yet just listen to "its so easy" and you can hear it in the sneer when Axl says "Turn around bitch I've got a use for you, besides you ain't got nothing better to do, and im bored." If its not punk to you, then you don't know punk.

As for my arguement; Zeppelin had alot of crap in their later work, in fact from the latter half of their collection the only thing I can think of that was exceptional was achillies last stand. Guns and Roses were the only band at the top when they came out, and as much as Kurt Cobain was given credit for abolishing Hair Metal, I think it owes its death to one third Cobain, one third itself, and one third Axl. He gave up writting mindless songs like Girls Girls Girls (god I hate Motley Crue) and stopped with the Glam crap and just rocked. In my mind, the only band that has a chance to out rock GnR is AC/DC.
