I recommend getting all of it. I have all GNR's albums, Slash's albums, Izzy's, Gilby's, Duffy's and anything else I find that any member of the band has worked on. I'm a big fan! Oh, except Axl, I don't have any solo stuff or The "New" Axl Rose Band stuff.

FaSho 10-22-2008 03:57 PM

Ehh I'm a pretty big fan of Velvet Revolver, but still not much of a GNR lover.

I heard a track off Chinese Democracy last week and almost cried. My hairdresser was a gay guy with leather pants and a tattoo on his neck - he also almost cried. What the **** happen to GnR?

alexlovesrock 11-08-2008 01:41 AM

Chinese Democracy

After 17 years GNR is finally releasing the legendary album, Chinese Democracy. Most of the tracks have already leaked.

Personally I love the blues (street of dreams), Better, and There was a time is pretty ok too. Shacklers revenge is also awesome.

Who thinks this album is gonna tank? Who thinks its gonna sell millions?
Personally i think it will do ok, not great, not bad, just ok.... maybe over 250,000 less than a 600,000 in its first week.

FaSho 11-08-2008 07:10 AM

It's going to sell for sure, but does that mean it's going to be good? No.

Meph1986 11-19-2008 05:30 AM

retail leaked

Mojo 11-20-2008 06:40 AM

Im listening to it now. I'm not all the way through yet so I reserve the right to change my opinion in time but currently I'd have to say it's a complete and utter load of ****.

thomasbreaker 11-20-2008 08:41 AM

I guess when one grows older, the pitches are quite harder to reach and there's obviously shortness of breath. Last performance I saw was a closing performance I think on a grammy show waay back late 90's?

Roygbiv 11-20-2008 09:11 AM

I think what happened was that so many genres came and went since GnR's last album - Grunge, NuMetal, RapCore - like, what do you make your next album sound like when nothing sounds relevant?

So obviously it's NuMetal.

I hate the one song I heard, but I'm probably going to buy the record anyways solely for its historical significance.

FaSho 11-20-2008 05:30 PM

Well theirs good Nu and bad Nu.
Like Linkin Park or SOAD?

Janszoon 11-20-2008 05:44 PM

I'm listening to the album right now on myspace. I'm only on the first song so I don't really have an opinion on the album yet, but I'm just kind of amazed that the thing is actually finally really coming out. I honestly didn't think it would ever happen.

Janszoon 11-20-2008 08:57 PM

Just finished listening to it. Meh. It's not horrible but it's not that great either. Several of the songs had promising beginnings but they quickly turned bland.

Angel's Punishment 11-20-2008 09:17 PM

It doesn't feel like GNR any more. Velvet Revolver is more GNR than current GNR is, honestly. And where did Axl's soul go?!

The main things I loved about GNR were a) Slash and b) the spirit Axl put into his vocals, and I both are no longer there.

Buuuut of course I'll buy it since it is GNR.

spark10036 11-22-2008 07:18 PM

I'm listening to it right now for the first time,I'm all the way to the 5th track...I don't know still can't believe it's out...I think I might liked a couple of them, but I have to check them all out at least a few times before I can have a real opinion

Angel's Punishment 11-22-2008 07:43 PM

Some of their songs are decent enough. I just try to think of it as a different band. If I think of it as GNR, it's a disappointment.

Maddest_Hatter 11-22-2008 09:19 PM

I listened to the whole album on myspace the other night... I'm SO dissappointed...

FaSho 11-23-2008 08:35 AM

Why would you be dissapointed? Did you really excpect it to be good?

I use to be a HUGE GNR fan, and I was kinda hopin it would be good... It was just a dissappointment...

FaSho 11-23-2008 11:24 AM

I'm not saying GNR sucks, I'm saying with all that was being said about this album beofre it was out I can't see how you could have excpected it to be good. But I'm just being a douche so pay no mind.

spark10036 11-23-2008 01:41 PM

I'm just going to disagree with everyone now. I listened to it about four times since last night and I think it's a very good album.
Yeah, it's different from the previous albums, and nowhere near the blues/rock style that the band had up to 1993. But I'm not going to comment if it should be a Gn'R album or an Axl Rose album. I knew from the beginning I wouldn't get something with a sound similar to AFD or UYI, so I wasn't dissapointed at all. And I even found a few of the songs very good and easy-listening, especially "Shackler's Revenge", "Street Of Dreams", "Madagascar","This I Love" and "Prostitute". I think the vocals are very good, even though I expected more from the lyrics really since it's been in the making for so long. I also liked the musicians.
If I had to give it a rating out of 10,I'd say: 7.

Now if I think they should had released it under a different band name: absolutely yes!

but again I think it's a good album

15Steps 11-24-2008 04:30 AM

Guybrush 11-24-2008 07:21 AM

I've yet to hear Chinese Democracy because frankly, I don't have high expectations. I do like GNR, though. Me and most of my friends know it from back then and it's hard not to get a little nostalgic when Slash's final guitar solo from the cheese-dripping November Rain comes on. It bypasses the brain and goes straight to the heart. ;)

I totally agree, he should have called it "The Axl Rose Band". David Lee Roth did it with AMAZING results. Also didn't hurt that he had Stevie Vai on it, but still, I think Axl could have pulled it off. He just used the name, because it's a HUGE name in music and should help it sell. Metallica did it with their latest album, it sucked, but I digress...

Whatsitoosit 11-25-2008 09:27 AM

The sound of this album is very impressive... they didn't seem to fold to the "loudness wars". Axl's voice is not aging like a fine wine... and the guitar work on this album is near perfect. Overall I think it's a good album which could have been 10-12 tracks... 14 is a bit much. I also agree with everyone who is saying Axl shouldn't have used the GNR name... it doesn't sound like GNR because it isn't GNR. Queen are guilty of the same, their new album isn't Queen (but it's not bad).

That was a great review! I wouldn't rate the album nearly as highly as that guy did but I enjoyed his insight into it.

ins0mniac 11-25-2008 02:01 PM

"On the aforementioned "Sorry," Rose suddenly sings an otherwise innocuous line ("But I don't want to do it") in some bizarre, quasi-Transylvanian accent, and I cannot begin to speculate as to why. I mean, one has to assume Axl thought about all of these individual choices a minimum of a thousand times over the past 15 years. Somewhere in Los Angles, there's gotta be 400 hours of DAT tape with nothing on it except multiple versions of the "Sorry" vocal. So why is this the one we finally hear? What finally made him decide, "You know, I've weighed all my options and all their potential consequences, and I'm going with the Mexican vampire accent.""

It's so true bahahaha.
Great review, for the most part I agree. Axl did what he wanted to. He gave us an album that was as much of a continuation from The Illusion series as possible. While working on his own time. Many people don't agree with it obviously, but Axl knows his diehard fans are willing to wait if he's making music and he put together an outstanding creation even if parts of it are seemingly over-complex. If you're gonna hate on Axl for this album, as he would say, get in the ring.

My personal favorite tracks are "Better", "There Was A Time", and "Madagascar." With "Better" being quite possibly my favorite GnR song period.

Whats more important than his rating is his reasoning for that rating.

Whether or not he gave an A or an F, why he did it matters most. There are people who would give it an "F" and no opinion, and when I accuse them of being cred-hungry jerk offs, everyone says their entitled to their opinion.

The thing is, this review says "these are the criteria, and this was how it was met" and by doing this, he doesn't pretend he's cosmic authority on everything.

Far too many people will slag this album to go with the flow. There will be a backlash, but few will say why they went in any direction.

Comus 11-25-2008 07:26 PM

Chinese failhattery sucked, title track is alright, but fair enough it's better than velvet revolver. So let's just pretend they all died after Use Your Illusion.

Knockin on heaven's door? Come on, you don't claim a cover-song is your favourite of an artist. Besides, "Welcome to the Jungle" severly kicks knockin in the groin, over and over and over again.

Can you quote what you're referencing, this thread is poised to dive bomb in to a catty-one-liners jamboree, can we get some integrity.

MURDER JUNKIE 11-26-2008 11:20 AM

What do you mean "it's going to be"?

If you haven't listened to it you really shouldn't have an opinion

What I can't understand is why Axl isn't doing any PR for this album, if they are going to recoup the 17 years of recording costs this album needs all the help it can get. I wonder what the total recording cost was?

spark10036 11-26-2008 12:40 PM

I really don't think he's having any money problems...he is the sole owner to the rights of the previous albums.

anw I think that's the way to do it!the old hard rock way,let the music make all the talking thing...
