85. Obituary - Xecutioner's Return A return to Obituary's classic sound and all around strong release. Slightly sludgy death metal with shreddy guitar solos and crisp vocals. Not much description needed. If you're a fan of the genre you'll recognize the name, if not than its recommendable. |

84. Eluvium - Copia Post orchestral or something like that? This album is beautiful yet hard to sit through and probably qualifies as the most intense album of last year. It would be higher on my list if I had the chance to listen to it more. To describe the sound its a weird mix of the big epic style of Hans Zimmer and the mellow melancholy of Stars Of The Lid. If you find yourself frequently buying film scores this would be a pretty safe investment. |

83. Behold...The Arctopus - Skullgrid Technical metal greatness. Heavy, abrasive, and jazzy. The songs flow like chaotic pieces of free jazz art *** nonsense and the riffs manage to be both catchy and brutal. Definitely not music for everyone, but it fills its role better than just about any band I can think of. |

81. Caribou - Andorra This is a well crafted album that while very modern in tonality and production still manages to bring a sense of the 60s. Sometimes folky, sometimes a pinch of psychedelic soundscapes, but always highly melodic with a lot of energy. This album manages to bring enough depth and subtlety that the elitist prick can find something spectacular buried in it while wrapping all of it in a strange jingly pop package that makes for something easily enjoyable to the casual listener. An essential pop album. |
