I think ITAOTS must have been popular before 2005, because my brother was in love with them for a time while I was still in my tweens (round '01 or '02).

But I agree completely. Its alright, but people somehow compare it to OK Computer and other gems. My roommate is one of those such people...he claims it was "the best album ever made." I loled in his face.

ITAOTS is one of the few albums I like that my mom loves. It's got mass appeal, yo. But yeah, I'm also going to be uber-hip and say On Avery Island is a lot better, mainly because it doesn't have the mass appeal.

That having been said though, I do prefer NMH to Radiohead. They pull off the angst a lot better.

I have never associated Radiohead with angst TBH. Dissatisfaction, melancholic and wistful maybe? but not angst (although 'Creep' could be classed as such).

i understand that angst has a lot of negative "emo" connotations but dissatisfaction and melancholy pretty much sum up angst for me

Bought Aeroplane Over The Sea when it first came out. Pitchfork didn't even exist as far as I was concerned. (didn't have a computer) My friends and I all liked it. We all have the album in our top 100 but none of us have it in our top 10. I think the album made #16 overall on Obner.

The album is good... but it's not a 'defining' album like
Black album for thrash
nevermind for grunge
Use Your Illusion for the whole die glam scene, die! thing.

'emo' did'nt even figure in my mindset TBH. Dissatisfaction seems like a final emotional descision to me whereas 'angst' is a state of anxiety, therefore you have no answer and are anxious to the eventual result. This implies a more ambiguous nature to the music IMO.

The black album is the opposite of a defining thrash album, it's an album of a band moving away from thrash released at a time that metal in general was moving away from thrash. Now Reign in Blood, on the other hand, is pretty much the defining thrash album.

I personally like ITAOTS, whether it's overhyped or not. I didn't even read Pitchfork's review, I just downloaded it because PMO mentioned it as really great or something.

People criticised my inclusion of Canada in my list but you have to admit there must be some truth in it if the first band people think of naming as a great Canadian band is a Led Zeppelin tribute act with a smurf for a lead singer. Had Rush been American or British they would be way down the bottom of the list for anyone listing great bands for that country.
I realise that during the 80s they moved away from the whole smurfy Led Zeppelin vibe , I just don't really care as I just find their music excruciatingly dull. I don't really see why they're considered progressive....
Well actually I do see why they're considered progressive. When you strip it down Rush basically playing middle of the road cock rock without cock rock lyrics and splashing loads of keyboards on it , which to your average knuckle dragging classic rock fan is probably the most musically daring they get.

Rush ... Fuck em
