36 : People Who Organise Their Music Collection In Genres

I will never ever understand the point of doing this. I get bored enough tediously putting mine in some kind of alphabetical order just so I can find the bloody things without having gone to the extra effort of allocating each CD as a type of music & filing it accordingly.

A practice for people who are either far too anal or have way too much spare time on their hands.

This doesn't apply to me...I have my soul collection completely separate from everything else and have them organised in alphabetical, company record label order, according to catalogue number.

I do insist on alphabetical order though. My thousand odd DVD's are the same. It's about the most simplest and effective way for storing.

Sometimes it's more convenient to have it by genre.

Not in alphabetical while in genre order. But I find it easier... Some days I'll be in an acoustic mood and I can just go straight, rather thank going through alphabetically to pick any band, I can just pick any one. Straight off.

My dad is an obsessive vinyl collector and he does this. I used to make fun of him about it but he does have a pretty good rationale behind it: At this point in his life his collection is so huge (many, many thousands of records) and he's been collecting for so long (nearly 50 years) that he doesn't even necessarily remember artists by name that easily. Hunting through thousands and thousands of alphabetized records for something he's not totally sure of the name of is too daunting for him so he breaks his collection down into much more manageable units by organizing by genre. I agree that it seems sort silly but with a collection that large it may be the best way to go for some people.

I hate the whole deal with genre, whether it's organising your collection or just trying to classify a track/band. The only time a genre label is useful is to tell you to turn left or right when entering a music store.

Check out the 'favourite metal' thread. People argueing (politely) about who comes under which category.

Also, when a band is placed into a certain genre and then releases an album that doesnt fit within that then people moan. London Calling is probably the best example of this. 'I hate London Calling, it's crap, it's not even punk.'

You can choose which one to sit on

I have approx 4000

It's not going to be put in genre anytime soon.

I have all my albums (both CD and Vinyl) in alphabetical order but I keep Classical, Soundtracks and Various Artists albums at the end.
