Your problem is you discount anything not indie, because indie music is mostly generated through corporate machines so it sounds the same as every other indie band. The Smiths and Blur are the only ever decent indie bands.

You're right, the only bands on independent labels that are worthwhile are the Smiths and Blur. Every other great band is on a major, cause lets face it folks, the guys up at Capitol Records know good music when they hear it ;)

Blur have never been on an independent label anyway.
