There's always something pretentious in titles, when the work of art doesn't include any words. How can anyone describe something abstract?
comparing a modern song to a classical symphony is like comparing a pebble in your driveway to a mountain in the Himalayas.

while i agree there's always a little something pretentious in naming one's creations, there's something far more pretentious in refusing to name them from either laziness or a hypocritical fear or appearing pretentious. especially when they're 5 minute pop rock overtures.

I don't know about which track you're talking, I'm just saying in general. I agree a that a symphony can't be compared to to 'modern' song. But they work on the same concept.

I hate it when people try to explain an instrumental song or a painting.
And I donno how we can know which 'untitled' is hypocrite or lazy or just not being pretentious. As for me, I got no problem with it.

I hate it more from a practical standpoint rather than an artistic one.

Sadly NIN have as much artistic merit as one of my pictures of a stick man.

It's so rare that I know the names of songs on albums I listen to—even albums that I listen to a lot—that from a practical standpoint I couldn't care less if a band named their song "A Bloated Composition of Tremendous Importance" or "Retractable Badger Dick" or "Track 4" or nothing at all. Unless the name of the song is lifted directly from the lyrics of the chorus chances are I'm not going to remember it, which is why I don't know many jazz songs by name even though I own and listen to quite a bit of jazz.
