To be fair The Darkness put the very last nail in that particular coffin of trad Metal bands. I know exactly where you are coming from and lament the dearth of really good metal bands but I don't think we will ever see those days again. It's Image first and music later with so many bands so if you are just a regular guy, your'e out.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l99/urbanH/HawkGo.jpg 73 : The Bastardization Of The Terms 'Psychedelic' And 'Space Rock' I like to go around checking out new bands , downloading new albums of artists I have never heard of , and if there is one way to get me interested in your music it's to describe it as Psychedelic or Space Rock. Do that and with me you get an instant download and my attention and time. However I have noticed a growing trend where I download someone who says they are Psychedelic or Space Rock only to find what I am in fact listening to is turgid bland unoriginal Post Rock. When I listen to these genres I want some or all of the following things : swirling guitars , demented keyboard or sax , pulverising basslines , hypnotic drumming , echoey vocals , crunching riffs. I don't want a song that sounds like someones left a brick on a keyboard and fucked off down the pub. If you look above you'll see an example of what I mean. i checked out this Argentinian band called Go Neko! , as I said I was promised Psychedelia and Space Rock. I looked at the cover and was astonished to discover it was a carbon copy of Hawkwind's Quark , Strangeness & Charm album cover. At this point i'm thinking about to download something obviously influenced by Hawkwind. So you could imagine my disappointment when I start to listen to it only to discover it's the 2000th 'Psychedelic or Space Rock' album i've heard this month that just sounds like a Mogwai/Godspeed/Sigur Ros album with all the originality taken out. I think all of these generic post rock bands out there (And trust me , there are fucking thousands of them) are finding that people are bored of Post Rock now and are having to lable their stuff as other things. Don't get caught out. P.S. Psych-Folk can fuck off as well. To me it doesn't sound remotely Psych or Folk and suspiciously like jangly indie. |
On a similar note, I can't stand American psychedelic bands. What in the flaming fuck is "psychedelic" about songs that just sound like long-winded country music? England actually produced some truly psychedelic sounding music back in the 60s with bands like Pink Floyd and Soft Machine, but the US most just churned folksy, country garbage like the Grateful Dead.

Urban did you ever check out Electric Orange? I thought my thread may have piqued your interest.

That's pretty good. I must have missed it when you posted it.

ETA: I just checked out both the bands I hadn't heard of on iTunes. Quicksilver Messenger Service is exactly what I was talking about with American psychedelic music, way too country sounding to feel trippy at all. Electric Prunes were better but still didn't seem all that psychedelic to me. |
I love the 13th Floor Elevators and I know they were labelled the first psychedelic band but they sound nothing like what the genre became known as. they were just a garage band tripping their tits off.

Wait what what whoa. Which people call Godspeed psychedelic? The same ones that insist that Ringo is an underrated drummer?
Because he is. |

Ocean by Eloy is also an awesome space-rock album. If there's something that could easily define space-rock, it's this!(ok fine, there are many others too, but this one stands out for me) I agree with the "psychedelic" tag though...too many of those around now-a-days but rarely what I'm looking for. |

This thread is tremendous. I especially like the one about Classic Rock snobs, I HATE thats soooo much. Its seems like at least 50% of the kids I go to parties with are like that.
Although, if Im going to get nitpicky I'll add that they rarely like 'Pet Sounds'. They tend to stick to whatever mainstream classic rock radio forcefeeds them, which, around here at least, (criminally) does not include any Beach Boys/anything pre-"Revolver" This may be my favorite thread on the internetz of all time. |
how does that piss you off about MUSIC?.......

When I get high/drunk, I don't go home and sit with my dong in my hand staring at a tiny screen waiting for my balls to drop. I like having fun. =D |
Someone obviously hasn't heard a lot of Dead if they think they're just a country band. Anywho.
You know what I hate? http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8...inkmoongx2.jpg http://pixhost.eu/avaxhome/avaxhome/...pha_H1993H.jpg Prog rock esque surrealism/fantasy album covers by everyone from low key folk singers to bland pop rock bands or anything that sounds absolutely nothing like the cover implies. When I'm at a record store and I buy an album from some band I've never heard just because it has Roger Dean cover art and it ends up sounding like Journey, I'm gonna be really pissed off. |

My advice for those wanting to check out The Dead would be to ignore any albums they've done after Pigpen died. |
I don't know why people read these , i'm full of shit. I've noticed half the stuff I say on this forum I contradict myself with just a couple of months later. I guess it depends on who's annoying me. If someone comes into a thread and starts hero worshipping a band in an annoying way , even if it's a band I like I can't help but start bringing up all their bad points just to annoy that person. I do the opposite too , if someone is putting down a band in an annoying way i'll just say I like them to argue with them. Even if i've not listened to that band in over 10 years. Just recently i've praised Whitesnake , Motley Crue and Kiss. I don't think i've even listened to those first 2 bands since about 1993. The other week I found myself listening to the Libertines first album and quite enjoying it. don't get me wrong , I still think Pete Docherty is an annoying moon faced cunt but I don't hate that album anywhere near as much as I did a year ago. Mind you in my defence if I did say I hated it then it was probably to annoy some Docherty fanboy as I seem to remember my opinion of that album being that it has it's moments but it gets old real quick. Maybe not hearing it since 2003 or 4 has refreshed it for me without having to hear all the hype. It wouldn't be the first time thats happened I said the same of REM & Franz Ferdinand and I like both those bands now after slagging them off for years. In summery : Ignore me. P.S. Now i've put myself in this NOTHING is off limits :D |

1. Why do you feel prog bands are the only ones who can legitimately use fantasy/surreal cover art? 2. Why would you buy an album purely due to the cover art? How does that indicate the quality of the music? |

I'll still be doing it in 2 months

I would have guessed number one was going to be the list itself, but who knows now, all the walls have come down.

Your thread title reminds me of a Miley Cyrus song, put that on your list as well Urbs.

Punk covers should look like this http://www.bilderhoster.net/safeforbilder/dab7sh2b.png Metal covers should look like this http://static.metal-archives.com/images/8/0/7/807.jpg Indie covers should look like this http://static.last.fm/coverart/300x300/1416566.jpg And prog covers should look like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...28album%29.jpg Pretty basic knowledge. If you sound like Aerosmith than for the love of god don't seek out Hipgnosis for your cover art. 2. I'm just describing a scenario. But if I see something with Roger Dean cover art, I would almost automatically assume it's progressive rock, album art should indeed be a pretty good indicator of what kind of music it is. What f*cking kind of punk or indie band would seek out Roger Dean for cover art? |

The best thing about the invention of the CD is that if an album you want has a Roger Dean cover you can now slip it inside your copy of 60+ BBW Sluts Monthly without any embarrassment. |
