I'd say you aren't searching hard enough. There are WAY too many good indie bands to act like music has dried up. Bon Iver, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, and plenty more that I haven't even heard of. The point being that if you're looking for a ****pile, you're always gonna find it.

the scarlet harlots are my pick of generic yet extremely good indie band 2008. They were support act for The Maccabees, I think... played over here sometime last year. I instantly thought they were going to take off but nothing has happened for them at all which is a shame. So yeah. Check em out on myspace or something, thats the only way youll find them..
