10.0 was definitely just a shock-value. Knowing P4k's history with Kanye, they definitely legitimately liked it, but I'm pretty sure it's still just a shock-value kind of thing. The album has so many obvious flaws that I doubt even a Pitchforkist could look past, namely the fact that Jay-Z ruins any song he touches with his pomposity and general lameness. Plus 10.0 is typically an album they see as 'revolutionary' in some way... The review they wrote for Kanye's new album is just... Really boring and hard to read, like some of their other stuff. They definitely don't hold it up on that high of a pedestal.
I can't believe I just wrote about Pitchfork AGAIN... I thought I escaped this. |
You're very right, clutnuckle, the review they wrote was trash. 3/4 of it wasn't even about the album, it was about Kanye West's life, image and integrity.
But I do disagree about Jay-Z, some of my favorite moments on the album are moments where he is rapping. Yes, he's pompous, but I respect the guy, and him being cocky doesn't annoy me in the least. Lame? Not at all. |
Big Boi's solo debut is another thing that I think was way over-hyped by Pitchfork.
I don't know if good Pitchfork attention benefits rappers as much as it does with people like Sufjan Stevens though. I can't imagine the readership of Pitchfork is into hip-hop as much as it's into whimsical little baroque pop pieces. |

His two verses repulsed me as can be expected, but I thought it was overall worth the listen. |
