Just get her 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields. I really don't think you can go wrong there.

So here's my problem. Every time I try to to find new artists, the suggestions are always artists that sound like the ones I already like, only worse. I want to branch out. I want to find more artists that don't sound like poorer versions of the ones I already enjoy. I want something new and different. How in the hell do I go about this?

You look on this forum and then go and listen to the artists on Last.fm - Discover new music with free internet radio and the largest music catalogue online. There are hundreds of bands on this site.

I've already got last.fm. Their suggestions usually suck. But for reference: last.fm/user/wretched_girl. Please ignore the lame user name.
