I need recommendations for '20s-'50s artists that were popular in the U.S. (not necessarily from the U.S., like Edith Piaf from France).

I have $10,000 in iTunes credit to spend so please name all the top artists of the '20s-'50s times in the U.S. that you can think of and I will compile a list to download all their albums/discographies of.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend GTFO. They're a trio from London.

I'm into a band called Level 42. Anyone know of any similar bands to them, cause I've never been able to find anything similar?

You mean more 80s cheesy pop bands, a bit dancy and all that? Here are some of the top of my head. I'll include videos so that you can hear if it is what you're looking for.

Paul Young (well, not a band obviously)
Spoiler for Come Back and Stay:

ABC
Spoiler for The Look of Love:

Kajagoogoo (haha, can't believe I remember this Limahl guy)
Spoiler for Too Shy:

Nik Kershaw (hmm...going down the memory lane)
Spoiler for Wouldn't It Be Good:

The Style Council (Paul Weller's band)
Spoiler for Money Go Round :

Kid Creole & the Coconuts (if you especially like this disco, funky stuff, this is quite good)
Spoiler for Stool Pigeon:

Hope this helps

I'm looking for something depressing or bleak or whatever. I'm not all too sure why, it just seems interesting. I already have a few "depressing/bleak" albums -- maybe in a more broad sense -- but most of them are expected:

Time Out Of Mind
Blood On The Tracks
Closer
Unknown Pleasures
Wounded Rhymes
The Queen Is Dead
Meat Is Murder
(OK, well, The Smiths albums may not fall under those categories, but they definitely aren't "happy" either)
Loveless
Sea Changes
Here, My Dear
I See A Darkness
Berlin
Pink Moon
Songs From A Room
Songs Of Leonard Cohen
Songs Of Love And Hate

Any more?
