Vampire Rodents are a magnificent sample-based outfit hailing from the foggy shores of Toronto, Canada. Note of the brilliant use of percussion and strings:

I must admit that not ALL of Vampire Rodent's work is quite similar to this. Perhaps their heartfelt rendition of Jan Garber's Babyface is more your bag of bones, baby:

Need new music... Anyone got any suggestions?!

Hello, I'm new and this is my first post, so sorry if I'm breaking any rules LOL I did read the rules but yeah...

Anyway, I'm kinda getting bored of the same old same old and thought I should update my iTunes but I really can't find any artists that does it for me...

I like jazz, the proper 30's/40's type, ska, classical, r&b and some of course modern stuff.

The thing that matters most to me in music is the lyrics, they have to be touching, witty and cleverly thought out. Secondly comes the vocals, I can't stand crap vocals and they have to sound original. And then comes the arrangement of the music itself of course. I like something to sound original and it has to be soulful otherwise it does nothing for me. I really love piano songs that make you shiver, and strong emotional vocals preferably female.

Some singers/bands I like (In order of preference):

Amy Winehouse
Billie Holiday
Dinah Washington
Sarah Vaughan
The Crystals
Corinne Bailey Rae
The Cinematic Orchestra
Duffy
Donny Hathaway
Nina Simone
Beyonce

There are more obviously but I'm not gonna bore you with lists upon lists of artists :D

So yeah I hope that's enough background for you to tell if I'd like anyone you would like.

I'm looking mainly for an Amy Winehouse type, jazz/ska/soul. Or classical piano/acoustic stuff.

Any suggestions? :)

But please no pop stuff like ke$ha and what not, I hear enough about them on the TV already :')

Hmmm... have you heard any Janelle Monae? She's got a varied style that's influenced by things like jazz and soul. I'd recommend checking her out for sure. As far as Piano Performances with female vocals, I'd recommend Tory Amos.

I'll also recommend my personal favorite, Townes Van Zandt, his music is really touching and beautiful.

Ooooh Janelle Monae is pretty good, never heard of her before. Gonna check out more of her music :D.

Not too keen on Tori Amos, beautiful song though but I prefer females with a deep raspy voice.

Townes Van Zandt is pretty good too :)

Sorry for being picky! haha

You might like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings...

Songbirds 01-08-2011 03:40 PM

Oooooh she's pretty good! I love her singing style, quite peculiar. I swear I've heard her before actually.

I think Amy Winehouse uses their band now too.

Heres just some examples of songs that I really like at the moment and would like to hear more things similar, just to be a bit more specific:

The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home
Amy Winehouse - Some Unholy War (her first album version that's more ska)
Corinne Bailey Rae - Like A Star

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
