Strapping Young Lad are pretty much free of cliches. They are driven mostly by Devin Townsend's bi-polar disorder. Extremely heavy, yet the vocals tend to fluctuate from growling to more melodic singing. He does this on purpose to showcase his extremely varied range and it really does add another depth to the song. The greatest thing about this group is the vocals do tend to have some tongue-in-cheek humor behind them, however the way they're delivered you may miss it on your first few listens. Normally I would recommend starting from the beginning "As Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing" but I feel that their second album, "City", is by far their strongest.

Devin Townsend mix tape.zip

That's a link to a Devin Townsend mixtape I made a few months back which has some Strapping on it, as well as his solo stuff. Depending on how heavy you like your metal, you may prefer his solo stuff... it's a bit more... tame.
