Another good way to go about it if you can't get any tips here is to check them out on RateYourMusic and grab whatever has the highest ratings - nine times out of ten, they're pretty much spot on. Works for me anyway.

I constantly use that site as a reference, but for quite a few artists I like, the ratings seem totally backwards based on my taste. But I think for well-known artists with hundreds or thousands of ratings per album, you're pretty much right that 9 times out of 10 the rating order is accurate.

Well, that's something to bear in mind. More often than not though, if you're approaching a discography with absolutely no knowledge of what the best albums are, you'll be off to a decent start with what they recommend you. Even if there aren't exactly a lot of ratings to go by, it's good to have some idea, no matter how odd it may seem once you know your way around that artist a bit more. I find LastFM's popularity hierarchies for each artist are a good way of going about this too.

Plus a lot of albums on RYM let you preview tracks, though it won't work the more obscure you go. There's a lot of good stuff on RYM that many people miss if they use it purely to record what they have.

No doubt...if you know nothing about the artist, there's no reason not to check out what's best rated on RYM.

I'm looking for a specific type of music, and I must be doing something wrong .

I was looking for something that is a mix of the old japanese/chinese music, the stuff that sounds really old, stuff played on the old traditional type instruments and mixed with some techno, trance, or something similiar.

I don't mind if it's free or I have to pay for it, either is fine. I was in China before and got to hear some stuff like that in a bar, can't get it out of my head.

I'd just like to know what it's called so I might have an easier time finding it.
