Simon and Garfunkel, Ray and Dave Davies, Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan... and sure, John and Paul weren't too bad either.

i went for capt. fantastic and the dirt brown cowboy.

Looking past the obvious, and oft reviewed brilliance of the 70's (and less so 80's), their still coming up with gold in the oughts. The song "I want love" was as amazing as it was simple, and I think thats one of the things that the really great teams can do. Be soaring and visual in common words and phrasing.

A lot of Fats Domino had the ability to be that simplistic and beautiful but on this list I'd have to say that Elton and Bernie have had a consistnt and elongated track record of making song, whether strung out on coke or sobered up witht he wisdom of age, they have some strong showings that are proving to be more timeless as we go forward.

Edit: It won't come as a shock to many people but I'm going to be a **** here and say that while Kathleen Brennan gets song writing credit, shes more of a muse as i've come to understand it and while its techinically a team, I don't know how much I want to include them (or how much as blinded by my own love).

I love the Smiths, and I'm really in a Stone Roses mood now, but in the end, I really had to go for Devoto/Shelley (anyone want to offer odds I'll have the only vote there? ). The Spiral Scratch EP, plus Orgasm Addict and Shot By Both Sides are six punk tracks that have never been topped.

A couple of songs was enough of an excuse for me to try and include Tom

John/Taupin have more votes than Jagger/Richards. I'm surprised.

And stevesonthebay, Paul Simon wrote all the songs for SG. I almost included pop writers like Goffin/King, Barry/Grenwich, Leiber/Stoller, but I figured I'd keep it more towards an in-band writers theme.
