Organising Collection on PC

I am finally at the stage where I can have my whole collection on my PC but how do I organise it? Already I am finding that I am forgetting what music I have so it would be nice to narrow it down within certain parameters. Do I make individual alphabetised folders? Make genre folders? (this then leads to sounding a twat when you have 6 zillion genres on your PC). How do you organise it or maybe you like chaos? I have to be tidy and methodical!

Heh this is why I like discography's they are almost always tagged to perfection (if you get from the right uploader). I have seen threads about this before, if this isn't a bad thing (sorry if it is) here is one from suprbay. Music sorting program thread
Good luck with your sorting.

So all albums by one band stay in one folder?

adidasss 06-24-2008 05:05 PM

Yes. Also, I have a separate folder for new music which I've downloaded recently. It helps me remember to listen to it and decide if I want to keep it.

Yep

If I want a bands discography to be in order I just add the year before the title. Or if they made more than one album in a year just add stuff like 1977.1 1977.2 and so on & so on. Although I don't usually bother with that.

and like Addidass all my new stuff goes in one folder till it's been heard. Then it get's filed on the HD if I like it enough.

I guess putting new music into an exclusive file makes sense. I usually put it straight into my main libary, consequently some stuff just get's lost! Thanks for the advice peeps!

I have far too much music to realistically dump all the artists in one folder, so I sort by genre and subgenre. All the album names are preceded by the release year and I have all albums of a band in one folder. I chuck my recently acquired albums in an excel spreadsheet for the benefit of my flatmates but it's also good as a to-listen list.

If you have itunes it does it automatically...I think
Mine does it that way, each band as it's own folder, and when you click on it, it has sub-folders and they're the albums they're featured on..

I was going to buy an ipod 2moro, so I downloaded itunes a couple of nights ago. What a useless pile of turd that is. It must have split up over 70 albums of mine AND when I wanted album artwork I had to register and supply credit card details! Like fuck! Combined with the terrible headphones and link to one PC, I decided to knix that and get a better phone with decent memory. Apple lost a customer! I knew that Apple and I would never form a fruitful arrrangement but I put all that to one side and nearly bit the bullet!
