Musical tastes and personality
I am still intrigued whether there is a link between music preference and personality traits. I have searched online many times and have'nt really found anything that has delved into this area without sounding like a scientific debate. I truly believe that what you listen to has some semblance on who you are and certain personality traits. I will refrain from going indepth for a little while until I see how the feedback is from this.

They're probably is, but idk. I do listen to The Smiths, because Morrissey's words of lost love and lonliness, really speak to me, same as Ian Curtis of Joy Division. So yeh?

I've found that most people who listen to indie are intelligent.

It seems like that would be hard to study. But I think for sure certain types of people are more likely to listen to certain genres.
It's like when you meet someone for the first time and they like all the bands you do, you know they are going to be cool.

I think you can get more a sense of someones general feelings more than you get a sense of their personality through what they listen to. For instance, I listen to metal most often. Do I have an angry or belligerent personality? Nope not at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

I don't think it's so much the music you listen to as what you take from the music you listen to. If you only listen to the Sex Pistols because you think rebellion and nihilism are cool, then that's one thing; if you listen to them because you genuinely believe that they're a great rock band with some great songs, then that means something completely different.
Some people listen to the Smiths because of Morrisey's lyrics; others listen because of Johnny Marr's incredible confections. So...it depends. |

I think it does. If your favorite bands are Van Halen, AC/DC, Guns N Roses and Led Zeppelin, While someone elses favorite bands are say The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure and Nine Inch Nails. Then there obviously has to be some kind of difference in personality.
I think indie fans are people who are more concerned about the personal themes in music and the image associated with it a lot more than the music itself. They have a thing they perceive as authenticity and consider it a very important aspect of any art, and they're probably more into miminalism. Prog fans are people who are most likely nerds who are not as interested about the emotional content of music and are more interested in things that are just aesthetically pleasing. Metal fans more often than not look at themselves as social outcasts, but they tend to take pride in themselves, and they have no problem with showing off. Punk fans are similar but are usually more nihilistic and abrasive. If you love a lot of different kinds of music and like just about anything. Then you're probably adventurous in nature and love to try new things. |

well what you feel generally is how I would explain personality. and you know it's not just metal = angry. When somebody tells you what they listen to, they're telling you what they connect with and what they feel. Yeah you can't totally identify what they are connecting with, or if it's the same feeling you get... but you do get an idea when they name off a list of their favorites and whatnot. It sounds a little egotistical. maybe it's only true if you "know" more about music than the other person. like half the people you talk to about music, you listen for a second and realize they know nothing, but I automatically respect someone who names a bunch of groups I've never heard of. That is very retarded and leads to a bunch of people listening to stupid stuff but... I think you can totally get a perspective of someone's personality through what they actually listen to. Man this is deep tho like what music IS. F ck a band, this is relevance
