2. Brand New "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006)"
Brand News latest release shows them having matured in every way. Musically, lyrically, vocally they sound like an entirely different band from when they first started out. This album, which is full of religiously themed songs and self-depreciating words all sung by frontman Jesse Lacey. An american boy who tries to sing like Morrissey but is too pissed off to do so. The band takes influences from so many places in this album its really hard to pick them out. Theres some obvious hardcore influences, some Modest Mouse influences ( very apparent in the slide on Jesus), as well as some Smiths/Morrissey influences, they're all over the map on this album. 1. Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton "Knives Don't Have Your Back (2006)"
"When I was a little kid…I would creep downstairs to the piano and write rudimentary songs about imaginary places. I’m told the first song I ever wrote was a love song to a cranberry tree. I always used the mute pedal. I hated the idea of anybody hearing me. Everywhere I’ve lived while working with Metric, I’ve written songs on the piano and played them for no one. On the advice of a friend, I decided I’d better start recording them before they were forgotten. Four meandering years later I ended up with this collection of songs featuring a few of my favorite people, a group I call The Soft Skeleton." Emily Haines's side project, which is primarily a solo project is (in my opinion) much better than Metric. The songs have a very soulful feel to them, dealing with loneliness, drugs and sexual suicide this release is enchanting. She's been compared to Ben Folds but she's more like Nick Drake with a piano and with a whispery voice akin to Elliott Smith. The mood of these songs is kind of a drink in the hand, sitting in the dark contemplative sort of mood. While in the corner a somber voice belts out lines like "Cursed with a love that you can't express / It's not for a fuck, or a kiss / Rather give the world away than wake up lonely." This thread is really awesome. I've only heard a few of these albums, so most of this stuff is new to me. i think i like the stuff you call pop the most, and less of the ambient and screaming stuff. Thanks for these

10. Bright Eyes "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn (2005)
Probably one of the few original things Bright Eyes has ever done and thats mostly thanks to Mike Mogis's abilities to work electronics in around Conor Oberst's sparse folk songs to create folktronica album in a way that's very different from other artists who have attempted it before. Conor also shows that meth addicts can result in some crazy ass poetry too. Favorite Song: Hit the Switch MySpace.com - Bright Eyes - Omaha, Nebraska - Indie - www.myspace.com/brighteyes |

My romantic side of me wanted to say Theme to Pinata was my favorite song but I didn't want to look cheesy so I lied and picked my second favorite. Down in a Rabbit Hole and Ship in a Bottle are great too, damn 2005 was sweet for music. I'm glad I wasn't including EPs/compilations in this list or it would've been even more difficult.

Hit the Switch is my favorite as well. Special mentions go to Easy/Lucky/Free and I Believe in Symmetry and Gold Mine Gutted was my ringtone for the longest. This is undoubtedly Bright Eyes' most progressive album, and you can tell they put a large amount of time into it. Much better than its release counterpart. |
