A lot of great music (and art) throughout the decades has been made through suffering. To say they've wasted their talents by being too serious is a dumb statement, Thom Yorke laid his soul bare for the sake of their art and wrote and performed to the best of his abilities. He expresses his true feelings no matter how dark, depressing and serious they are. The same goes for the rest of the band in their contribution.

It's the bands that don't express their true feelings that are the ones wasting their talent.

It feels like he's pouring his soul into his work, whether if it's actually pretentiousness or not (I despise people who spew out "pretentious!" at every elaborate piece) doesn't matter much.

Pretentiousness is underrated.... frankly, I am a fan of the gaudy and overwrought when it comes to music...

Actually Radiohead made their strong aspects shine by being serious... What's beautiful about their music is that not a lot of things are consistent/loops, it keeps things interesting.. And their chord progressions are very unique

Very true Pulsar, I completely agree with you! There really are no radiohead albums that drag or are dull in any way and I could seriously listen to every album from the Bends through in Rainbows and not get bored.
