A small-town band make a stadium-rock album, they've sold out.

A big-time band make a movie soundtrack, they've sold out.

Iggy Pop does car insurance adverts, he's sold out.

Iggy Pop selling car insurance wasn't a crime against humanity because of its contrast with the punk idols image, it was a crime against humanity because the adverts in question were so bloody annoying.
The concept of selling out is going against your beliefs or morals in order to obtain material possession or gain something. Which is something that people have done.

I do believe the term is used too loosely, and I do agree that if a band wants to license their song, it's their business and it's not selling out, but selling out is like when 'Against Me!' went onto a major label.

I wasn't bothered too much that they'd spent their first few albums ranting about how DIY they were and how being punk was important to them but then went directly to produce music under a major label, but it was what happened.

But sometimes, like in Iggy's case, he's done enough, he gave you good music for a long time, let the man do what he wants!

And if it does then wouldn't he have sold out ages ago when he contributed Talk Show Host to the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack in the mid 90s?
you're correct, but i also think you're misinterpreting what i'm saying. they didn't contribute the music to the movie just to make money. my perception of a sell-out is an artist (of any medium) who's appreciation and intent of art is overruled by their desire for money. it doesn't necessarily make the art itself worse; i just don't like the notion behind it.

i agree with clutnuckle.

ANOTHER new Thom Yorke track. There is so much new material coming out the Radiohead outbox these days that its hard to keep on top of it all. This is the one that is going to be used on the Twilight soundtrack, apparently... I don't see the connection myself, but good song anyway. It gets very Eraser-ish in the final minute.

Yeah. I wouldn't say Eddy Vedder's tracks for Into the Wild were anything close to "selling out."

I'm sorry

I didn't care for the new Twilight song. It just didn't seem to go anywhere.

Isn't that Twilight soundtrack song only meant to be a Thom Yorke solo thing? Or am I confused...
