"Masked" groups and singers

Fellow forum members,
I did a search and did not find a thread about "masked" groups and singers, so I thougth that I would start a thread listing groups and singers who hid their identity either through masks or face paint.

KISS
Slipknot
Telex
TISM

I am sure that there are many more!

[MERIT] 04-04-2008 08:07 AM

So, were not discussing their musical contributions ..... just that they wear masks ....beautiful

But on topic, Kiss has got to be the most famous. slipknot has quite the following amongst know-nothings. Mushroomhead and Gwar wear disguises, and Axl Rose's plastic surgery should count as well.

Seltzer 04-04-2008 08:11 AM

Perhaps a bit off topic, but my mate's band played a gig with a thrash band whose frontman wore a paintball mask on stage. Apparently he competes nationally in paintball.

GWAR deserves a special spot in this genre. it's one thing to wear a mask, it's entirely something else to create full on body costumes so that all the band members seem monstrously huge.

aside from gwar the only band i can really think of that had a valid reason for wearing masks was mr. bungle in the early part of their career. after mike patton joined faith no more and started popping up on MTV he decided to wear a bondage mask on stage to cover his identity so that they wouldn't have to deal with connect the dot rock fans getting incredibly confused and disturbed by bungle's onslaught. he also credits himself as 'vlad drac' on their self titled album. by the time the 2nd major bungle disc came out FNM had fallen out of the limelight and they dropped the gimmick.

Would the New York Dolls count? Alice cooper?

I'm gonna have to add just about every mainstream rapper to this list. They may not wear masks or make-up, but they put on a fake, tough guy, gangsta persona. Still masks their true identity IMO.

sweet_nothing 04-04-2008 03:24 PM

^^very true^^

Doesn't that Buckethead schmuck wear a mask?

Edit: Before I get ripped to shreads by Buckethead fans, I admit I've never heard any of his music, and didn't base my "schmuck" comment on his talent. Just his get-up, which I find strange and a little desperate.

if you're going to use that logic you might as well include just about every other mainstream rock band from the last 3 decades. most of the 'metal' bands from the late 70s and early 80s. anything 'punk' from the last 10 years. and just about every emo band on the radio today.

mosesandtherubberducky 04-04-2008 06:40 PM

The Sounds of Animals Fighting wears (or is it wear) cute animal masks ^.^

and buckethead wears a plain white mask because it scared the sh!t out of him when he was a kid

you mean taking snippets from posts out of context and not bothering to figure out what's really being implied?

Woowoo, I get to do this again.

I've never heard an emo band on the radio once. What emo bands have you heard on the radio?

boo boo 04-04-2008 07:57 PM

the same ones that get called emo on tv. although i guess it really all depends on what definition of emo you're going to choose to use to crap on my comment.

boo boo 04-04-2008 08:12 PM

Fake emo: Crappy emo thats popular.

Tr00 emo: Crappy emo thats not popular.

I'm f*cking good at this, I really am.

mr dave 04-04-2008 08:14 PM

the only point i tried to make in here was that if rappers were going to be listed as a masked group because of the front they present to the camera than most other mainstream acts should be listed in the same way.

boo boo 04-04-2008 08:23 PM

I'd certainly say Emo is just as image based as gangster rap. Emo culture has been heavily stereotyped, but sad thing is that from what I know, most of the crap that is said about emo kids ring true.

On a similar but completely irrelevant note, I'd like to ask Ethan this, is there any truth to that stereotype that emo kids only play old NES games?

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:30 PM

Scene kids yes, emo kids don't really exist because fans of emo music tend to scoff at being called emo since it's a genre not a person.

boo boo 04-04-2008 08:41 PM

Didn't answer my last question, do you spend every weekend sobbing and playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! or not?

Also, bad example, punk is a music genre, but punks certainly do exist.

And one of the stereotypes of emo is "not wanting" to be called emo but conforming to the stereotype of what emo is.

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:43 PM

For your information it was Contra.

mr dave 04-04-2008 08:54 PM

contra would make anyone sob if they didn't use the konami code.

boo boo 04-04-2008 08:59 PM

Konami are real hard asses. Contra III and Hard Corps didn't even have the Konami code and those games were hard as f*ck.

TRPBass16 04-10-2008 01:15 PM

bands with costumes and make-up:

behemoth
dimmu borgir
cradle of filth
dethklok (spelling?) just casue there cartoons
the misfits
king diamond

thats really all i can think of.

Comus 04-10-2008 04:05 PM

Most black metal bands.

timefornothing 04-10-2008 08:53 PM

I might not make any friends by saying this on a SERIOUS BUSINESS music forum, but the Aquabats have full costume. Even guys who aren't in the band get full costumes. And they're awesome.

NSW 04-10-2008 10:19 PM

Mudvayne...don't they wear masks or facepaint or something? Or was it just that one video?

miskit 04-10-2008 10:24 PM

dont know if mentioned yet but gwar, they dress up hard core

St.J 04-20-2008 02:50 PM

KISS Started the heavy makeup thing I guess.

Mr.Bungle kind of started the mask thing.
