Crowquill's Top 101 Singles

Titles pretty self-explanatory.

101. The Magnetic Fields "Why I Cry"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/whyicry.gif

Back when Stephin was kind of a shy vocalist and hid behind electronics and noise this song is a slow ballad where the cheesyness is the charm. Merritt slowly sings over a gentle melody "So you said goodnight / When you meant goodbye / Now our love has died / This is why I cry."

I couldn't find a video to this song but I find a pretty cover by Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) and Daniel Handler (Lemony Snicket.)

sleepy jack 04-03-2008 08:47 PM

This isn't madness.

THIS IS SPARTA!

simplephysics 04-03-2008 08:49 PM

oh my god.
I have a sudden urge to watch 300 right now.

15Steps 04-03-2008 09:22 PM

that was a pretty great cover.

but whenever i hear that songs name i cant help but think of reh dogg XD

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:09 PM

100. Sleater-Kinney "Entertain"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../entertain.jpg

Most of those female punk bands from Olympia, Washington (also known as Riot Grrl) suck and haven't aged well. Surprisingly Sleater-Kinney has with their 2005 albums The Woods they showed to be musically much more talented than most of their riot grrl contemporaries as well as just sounding better in general (they've also probably outlasted them all.) I rarely love the drumming in this song but it really is great drumming and Carrie Brownstein proves to be just as good as singer as Corin and their vocals coupled together in this song are beautiful. Plus it features when of the most oddly placed (and therefore cool) guitar solos ever.

Alfred 04-04-2008 08:16 PM

I doubt I can even name 101 singles that I actually really like.

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:17 PM

Well about 20 of these are the Smiths so :p:

Alfred 04-04-2008 08:17 PM

Cheater. :(

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:19 PM

It's not my fault their singles are so brilliant. I would list which are amazing but then I'd give away my list <.<

Alfred 04-04-2008 08:21 PM

The only Smiths song I have in my music library is Well I Wonder. ._.

Edit: But I don't want to turn this into a Smiths thread.

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 08:22 PM

Well then this thread will be a good chance for you to expand your Smiths taste =D

Alfred 04-04-2008 08:23 PM

Well, you post the singles, I'll give em' a listen. ;D

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 09:03 PM

You know it makes me sad to say this but Elliott Smith chose kind of lame singles. It's like he wanted to avoid radio attention. Anyways!

99. Silver Jews "Send in the Clouds"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ntheclouds.jpg

The Silver Jews will always be cooler than Pavement, yeah I said it. But there is one song this question always leaves stuck in my mind. Why can't monsters get along with other monsters?

I liked his cover of All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down. And Thirteen. :(

sleepy jack 04-04-2008 11:37 PM

I think my favorite cover he's done is These Days (originally by Nico) it's weird how I hate Nico but all my favorite artists seem to cover her. But anyway those weren't singles, surprisingly. He tended to choose stuff like Son of Sam for his singles. I mean it's a good song but compared to like Everything Means Nothing to Me I can't see why he chose that as the single. I guess its catchier though.

jackhammer 04-05-2008 02:12 PM

Nice idea Ethan. Maybe I will find a hidden gem or two!

sleepy jack 04-05-2008 02:20 PM

98. The Smiths "This Charming Man"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...harmingman.jpg

I'm probably going to get some crap for sticking this so low but in my defense I love all these songs on this list to death so even making it on here is an honor and this isn't even the best song on the Smiths debut :D So yeah!

Anyways this song's guitar intro is fantastic on the original however I much prefer the Peels session version and I'm glad I've found that. This is one of the few songs that I've heard slaughtered three or four times and still have been able to listen to the original the same before and after hearing the bad covers. But I think its that way with all Smiths songs for me, especially since good Smiths covers are a dime a dozen.

15Steps 04-05-2008 07:50 PM

ok, i have nothing against the smiths, but, 20 singles by one band?

seriously man.. thats kinda cheating :\

The Magnetic Fields-Why I Cry
This is nice and simple in composition and lyrics but it does it. Ben is obviously the better vocalist but I rather listen to whats him name it's much cuter that way. I'll probably give the album this one is off a go. I like immature stuff.

Sleater Kinney-Entertain
The vocals were grating at first but they grew. Surprisingly fun.

sleepy jack 04-05-2008 09:06 PM

If you liked that song I think you'd definitely dig their stuff like Holiday and Get Lost, later albums maybe not so much since its more sleekly done and Stephin isn't hiding behind the music anymore. Which is kind of cool but kind of lame at the same time because when he was there was this really nice shy quality to the music.

sleepy jack 04-05-2008 09:43 PM

97. Elliott Smith "Happiness"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../happiness.jpg

My friend Kenny once called this one of the saddest songs he'd ever heard and at first it's kind of hard to understand this, particularly the studio version. It's an upbeat song with an almost bouncy drumbeat but underneath it is one of Elliott's finest displays of lyricism in his typical cryptic manner. "What I used to be will pass away and then you'll see / That all I want now is happiness for you and me." beautifuls.

Just curious, what do you think is the best song on the debut, if not This Charming Man. Reel Around The Fountain?

sleepy jack 04-05-2008 11:08 PM

I don't know it's kind of hard for me because I randomally get hardcore into songs on that album and while I think the Queen is Dead is their best album The Smiths is my favorite. I went through a phase where I was really into Reel Around the Fountains the (Oh but take me to the haven of your bed part is still one of favorite moments in a song ever) but I think right now my favorite song is The Hand that Rocks the Cradle just before that it was Hand in Glove. I think Suffer Little Children is my most consistent favorite from it.

ProggyMan 04-05-2008 11:10 PM

PRetty Girls Make Graves used to be my favorite (My favorite Smiths song too, but I didn't even like the band back then) , but now it's This Charming Man, with The Hand That Rocks tied with Reel Around The Fountain for second.

96. Stars featuring Emily Haines "Ageless Beauty"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...lessbeauty.jpg

God bless you Broken Social Scene not only did you result in the offshoot of tons of great bands you resulted into them all being connected into eachother so you get cool things like Emily Haines singing on a Stars track. Anyway, Ageless beauty, possibly one of the most beautiful concepts of love ever? Yes, now listen to the song.

Its good to see Suffer Little Children get some recognition, i think most people are put off by the subject matter but its such a great end to the album.

95. Morrissey "Everyday is Like Sunday"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...likesunday.jpg

This song really didn't connect with me until I really paid attention to the lyrics seeing as it seems like it was in many ways written about my boring, rainy coastal town. I don't have much to say on this mostly because I'm headed out the door but check it! This song showed Morrissey's solo career was very much not the Smiths, which is a good thing. Personally I think he's done just fine without Marr.

Piss Me Off 04-07-2008 11:03 AM

The rest better be veeeeerryy good if you're putting that all the way down here.

Zombeels 04-07-2008 12:25 PM

What is your criteria for singles. Did the song have to be officially released as a single? Do B-Sides count? Or are these just your favourite songs.

Davey Moore 04-07-2008 12:30 PM

So it's not songs, just singles?

wuttttttt

sleepy jack 04-07-2008 03:17 PM

It's the songs that were released on the singles.

jacklovezhimself 04-07-2008 06:01 PM

i find that disappointing.

sleepy jack 04-07-2008 06:04 PM

Why? If you guys want I could just go with my original top 100 EPs idea.

jacklovezhimself 04-07-2008 06:07 PM

woah, no it's cool i just thought it was songs.
so far I'm enjoying this thread though so please continue.

sleepy jack 04-07-2008 06:12 PM

94. Belle & Sebastian "I'm a Cuckoo"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../imacuckoo.jpg

I'm cuckoo for I'm a cuckoo. That's all I feel like saying.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-07-2008 06:18 PM

Belle & Sebastian do Thin Lizzy :thumb:

Zombeels 04-07-2008 10:24 PM

Did you check to make sure there was a video for every song you picked?
