It depends what bitrate your tracks are, I think most estimates you see on the adverts for them are for pretty low bitrates. If you go higher then you obviously can't get as much on.

Toe's right, it really depends on the quality. I'm pretty sure the estimates are for 4 minute songs @ 128kbps...I have 600 songs on my 4GB and its full :/ I'm looking to get a 16GB Creative Zen. In total I have 1 312 songs @ 7.3 GB.

Thats why I never trust the company. They seem to figure small low quality 128's so they can hike it up. Not to mention a 4 Gig MP3 is actually 3.7ish because of the software and used space. So there goes a few more songs from what they said.

Yeah, my 160GB iPod actually comes with around 140GB free memory once their software is taken into account.

Your ****ting me!?? That seems like an awful lot. My 80 has something like 7 or 8 which is still pretty high.

Yeah, it wasn't so drastic on the 30 and 80 ones as far as I remember. But back then I had taken the software off and put a better one on. It's harder to do with the classic now though so I've left it.

What exactly do you mean by changing the software? As in completely, for a new playing format?

Yeah the most common is Rockbox

you can also install Linux etc on it and have daft things like Wikipedia on your iPod etc, lol.

Rockbox's website is saying that it does not run on Ipod Classics. Thats a bummer. It looked nice.

Yeah it's good but that's why i dont have it on my latest one, cos it's a classic.
